Student affairs dean welcomes new challenges
Sitting in his newly painted office on the second floor of the Old Westbury Student Activity Center is James Ramert (M.S. ’81), NYIT’s own “Gentleman Jim.” A stalwart supporter of the college, he has dedicated almost three decades of his professional career to its students.
James wears an air of chivalry as comfortably as his tailored suits. Warm and sophisticated, his manner is an invitation to all members of the NYIT family who work together on behalf of its students.
He began his career at NYIT in 1976 as director of student activities and worked his way through the ranks to dean of student affairs. |

Nearly 30 years into his job, James still finds it exciting. He thinks of each student as an individual, and while he may have dealt with similar circumstances over the years, he treats every situation as a unique opportunity to help others. “Every day brings a new, wonderful challenge,” he says.
Soon after joining NYIT, James learned that the college was starting a master’s program in labor and industrial relations, and he signed up. Not only did it afford him an excellent education, he says, it gave him a glimpse inside NYIT’s classrooms. He recalls the camaraderie he shared with his classmates and still keeps in touch with many of them. A reunion, he hints, would be nice.
During his tenure, James has seen many changes at the college, but it is NYIT’s ever-improving organizational structure that stands out in his mind. “More than ever, we know who we are and where we are going. As a result, we are much better positioned to make that journey,” he says.
