The women’s volleyball team experienced another stellar year, finishing the season with a 26-8 record and advancing to the Division II NCAA Northeast Regional Tournament. Though ultimately defeated by Bentley College in the opening round, the team made it to the tournament for the third consecutive year.
Furthermore, several players achieved post-season honors. Senior Burcu Hakyemez became the all-time kills leader at NYIT this season by surpassing the 2,000-kill mark, solidifying her place as one of the college’s all-time great volleyball players, as well as adding Daktronics All Northeast Region First Team Honors, New York Collegiate Athletic Conference (NYCAC) First-Team All-Conference honors, and the 2004 NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament Team honors to her collection of athletic achievements.
In addition, Hakyemez became the first NYIT volleyball player to be named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Division II Honorable Mention All-American team. Recovering from an injury late in the season, sophomore Nathalia Rivera had an outstanding tournament and earned NCAA Northeast Region All-Tournament Team honors. In addition, freshman Kristin Maier was named NYCAC Co-Rookie of the Year and earned NYCAC All-Conference Second-Team honors.
