A Historic Championship

The men’s soccer team snapped an 18-year drought last season by advancing to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1985. Although NYIT lost in the first round to East Stroudsburg, the Bears’ successes on the field put them back on the map as one of the leading soccer teams in Division II.

Expectations were high this past season as nine of 11 starters returned from the previous year. But with one of the toughest schedules in the Northeast and season-ending injuries for two players at the start of the season, the Bears struggled out of the gates, compiling a 4-2-4 record after the first 10 games.

The team did not quit, going 7-2 in its last nine games and capturing its first NYCAC regular season championship in NYIT men’s soccer history, reaching an impressive 8-1 conference record.

Several players were recognized for their skills on the field. Senior midfielder Manuel Martinez, senior forward Eduardo Anacleto, junior defenseman Christian Caines, and freshman defenseman Vanicious Da Silva were each named to the NYCAC All-Conference teams. In addition, Martinez and Caines each earned First-Team All-Conference honors, while Anacleto and Da Silva garnered Second-Team honors.
