Building a Future for Success
NYIT Athletics enjoyed what could be considered its most successful year of intercollegiate athletics ever. Men’s soccer, women’s volleyball, men’s basketball and lacrosse all advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) tournament while a plethora of athletes received post-season honors. On the heels of these outstanding achievements comes a new era in NYIT Athletics as work on the newly renovated sports complex at the Old Westbury campus is completed.
Alumni who attended NYIT years ago may remember the field house bursting at the seams with student athletes gearing up for competitions. Of course, with just four locker rooms, a small training room and a narrow glass tunnel connecting the gymnasium, things got crowded.
Well, that has changed. Alumni visiting the new NYIT sports complex will immediately notice that the glass tunnel is no more, replaced by a grand entrance into the Hall of Fame Lobby, where greats of NYIT’s athletic past will be prominently displayed alongside numerous championship trophies.
Between the gymnasium and coaches’ offices are new private locker rooms for each athletic team. The renovation also includes an expanded training room, a newly constructed weight room filled with fitness equipment, and a new state-of-the-art floor in the gymnasium.
For NYIT Director of Athletics Clyde Doughty Jr. (B.S. ’81, M.S. ’96, M.P.S. ’98) who has been with NYIT since the 1970s when he played for the school’s basketball team, this labor of love was well worth the wait.
“It is gratifying to witness how the renovations have enhanced our image and, more importantly, our ability to serve the NYIT community,” Doughty explains. “And this is just the beginning. We want to assure continued growth in all areas of athletics.”
