A Spirit of Excellence Guiding Us Forward

There’s something wonderfully electric in the NYIT air these days. In fact, I’ve been told you could feel it intensify in the past year or two. If you walk the halls of our campuses or take classes online, you immediately sense this excitement, pride, and spirit of NYIT. For many it is a palpable energy; a positive charge when they learn of the continuing achievements of our students, faculty and staff.

Right now, we are engaged in one of the most dynamic, exciting times in our history. We are delivering on our mission. We are serving our students well and are striving to serve them even better. We are delivering quality in the classrooms and laboratories. We have much to be proud of.

Let me share with you some of the exciting things that are taking place. For the sixth consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report has recognized NYIT as one of the top schools in the country. Our sports teams continue to top lists in Division II, with women’s volleyball and men’s basketball, men’s soccer and lacrosse all advancing into the National Collegiate Athletic Association playoffs this year. In a global competition, NYIT is the only school in the metropolitan area selected as a finalist in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2005 Solar Decathlon.

In areas of research, many of our faculty have received grants for their innovate studies, including a NYCOM physician who was awarded in a peer-review process a four-year, $1.3 million grant for heart disease research. Students at the Carleton Group, our award-winning student advertising agency, designed the championship logo for the Long Island Ducks.

The NYIT that you know continues to transform itself. Much of this is possible thanks to the dedication of our faculty and staff. We are fortunate to have a core of longtime educators whose years of experience provide the backbone of our programs. Equally important are the newcomers — some of the best in their fields — recruited for their energy and innovations. Together, they propel us to a new level of excellence.

But they are not working alone. Each member of the NYIT community — faculty, staff, students and all of you, our alumni — plays an integral part in the school’s success. It’s not just about one or two or even 100 individuals; it’s about everyone working to protect and enhance our reputation for all who came before us and those who will come after us.

Looking ahead, it’s important that we continue to build on our strong foundation and take the unique opportunity before us: to define the genre for higher education in the 21st century. And why shouldn’t we define the emerging paradigm? There is no school in our competitive mix that has a better crystal ball than we do, and I submit that there are few — if any — schools that can match our effectiveness at having prepared 65,000 students for careers in the real world.

I believe this year and next will be very special years in the history of NYIT, filled with life-shaping promises and opportunities, traditions and transformations. The future is ours for the making, and I invite you to join me in creating a trust … a legacy that will live long after we have moved on.
