New Degrees Respond to Marketplace Demands

The training of today’s successful engineers requires the ability to respond to ever-changing market demands. “The truly great thing about NYIT is that we are nimble enough to be market responsive,” says Dr. Heskia Heskiaoff, dean of the School of Engineering and Technology. Proudly, he reports that two new undergraduate degrees and a new master’s degree were launched in fall 2004.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, jobs in the information sector are expected to grow nearly 20 percent in the next decade. Recognizing that opportunity, the engineering school launched a Bachelor of Science degree in information technology to prepare graduates for top positions as software applications engineers, systems analysts and database administrators, program developers, network engineers, digital media engineers, and Internet security specialists.

The new Bachelor of Science degree in electronics and information security is geared toward law enforcement professionals and others seeking a career in security management. “There is a critical need for graduates skilled in the fundamentals and underlying technologies of security-related areas,” says Heskiaoff. “Our program is unique in that it offers students several options, including a series of computer and telecommunications courses to prepare them for the Cisco Certified Network Associate exam, as well as a minor in criminal justice to enhance their career options as security managers.”

Recognizing a dearth of advanced degrees in computer security, NYIT was fast to respond to this market need with the creation of a Master of Science degree in information network and computer security. “From hacker exploits to encryption techniques, from intrusion detection to cyber law, we’ve created a one-of-a-kind advanced degree program,” Heskiaoff reports. “This program responds to market demand for advanced skills in the implementation and management of computer and network security systems.”

The school’s formula for market responsiveness must be right — applications continue to arrive from prospective U.S. and international students for the new degree programs. “We expect the uniqueness of our programs to draw attention worldwide,” says Heskiaoff.
