Roger Smith, B.Arch. ’78
 
Current Position: Principal architect and managing partner at Burton, Behrendt & Smith P.C., a 75-person architectural firm with studios in Patchogue and Sayville, N.Y., specializing in educational, library and commercial architecture.

Organizations: Board of Directors, American Institute of Architects; Chairman, New York State Building Code Board of Review.

Claim to Fame: “I’m the father of two beautiful and talented daughters.”

Honors: American Institute of Architects Long Island Archi awards (1998, 1999);
American Institute of Architects Long Island Archi commendations (1993, 2004); and
Man of the Year, New Interdisciplinary School (2003)

Favorite NYIT Moment: “Meeting my wife, Connie (B.S. ’78), in my senior year.”

NYIT’s Impact: “Attending NYIT’s architectural program — the best in the country — gave me the strong foundation I needed to succeed.”

Work Philosophy: “Design with your heart. Also, design with the community in mind. For example, when designing an educational institution, the students are the true clients.”

Favorite Movies: “‘Gladiator,’ ‘Field of Dreams’ and ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind.’”

Interests: “I’m adding ‘wine connoisseur’ to my list that also includes golfing, cooking, gardening and collecting antique trucks."
