Local Expansion, Global Reach
Whether you graduated in 2002 or 1962, today's NYIT has evolved dramatically since your commencement day.
During his inauguration in 2000, President and CEO Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., described NYIT's forthcoming evolution into a regional institution with "national and global reach, and national and global impact."
Today, the changes-some subtle, some profound-are apparent across NYIT's primary campuses, international locations and online endeavors. Across NYIT's campuses, students now access wireless networks that offer rapid and secure Internet access from mobile computers. The wireless systems also link to NYIT's one-year-young fiber optic network.
Meanwhile, a 60,000-square-foot expansion to the Manhattan campus, located near Columbus Circle, opened in January. It includes five floors of new classrooms, labs and offices for several NYIT schools and programs. A sixth floor-including a 94-seat conference center-will open later in 2004.
"New York is the media and communications capital of the world," says Roger Yu, Ph.D., dean of NYIT's School of Arts, Sciences and Communication. "The new space is playing a crucial role in attracting and educating students."
NYIT's Long Island-based campuses also are prospering. In October, NYIT unveiled the newly renovated Epicurean Room restaurant, which hosts community events and private celebrations on the Central Islip campus. The Central Islip Student Activities Center also received renovations.
In Old Westbury, NYIT is expanding its athletics facilities. The renovations, slated for completion shortly, include new exercise facilities, locker rooms, training rooms and a Hall of Fame area.
There's also progress on the international front. In Jordan, NYIT has opened a second site and enrollments are approaching 600 students. "Our new programs in Bahrain are also off to a great start," notes Ken Thigpen, Ph.D., dean of global programs and extended education.
And in China, where 134 NYIT students are pursuing degrees, President Guiliano recently visited and congratulated Jiangxi University on its 80th anniversary. "I am here celebrating one of the partnerships of the future, the alliance of Jiangxi University with an institution on the other side of the earth, NYIT."
Now that's positive global impact.
