Anywhere, Anytime Education
By Kathi Vieser (alumni@nyit.edu)

New opportunities, new challenges and the promise of something better. Ellis Island represented all that and more to millions of immigrants.

It is in that spirit that NYIT is collaborating with UNext Inc., a leading online education company, to launch Ellis College of NYIT (http://www.ellis.nyit.edu), an online education program designed to help working adults advance their education, further their careers and improve their lives.

"Working adults require an online program that provides a clear degree path and courses designed to capitalize on their unique experience," says Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., NYIT president and CEO. "Ellis College of NYIT fulfills this need, with all the advantages of an NYIT education."

Getting Started
Ellis College of NYIT's initial focus is bachelor's degree completion for students who have both previous college credits and relevant work experience.

The curriculum currently offers degrees in business administration with three concentrations-marketing, management or small business and entrepreneurship-and in accounting. More recently, an M.B.A. program launched in January.

Courses typically begin every three weeks and can be completed in six weeks using any Internet-enabled PC. Depending on how many transfer credits a student brings to the program, he or she should be able to complete the degree in a relatively short period of time, in some cases less than one year.

The educational platform, developed by UNext learning and technology experts, lets students learn efficiently and collaborate easily with classmates and faculty members. Because NYIT faculty members are responsible for all Ellis College curricula, students receive the same high-quality education found in NYIT's classrooms, in a digital format that transforms the way higher education is delivered.

"Ellis College complements-but certainly doesn't replace-our physical campuses, classrooms and research labs," notes Guiliano. "It extends access to opportunity to working adults who don't have the time, energy or resources to attend a physical campus."

UNext officials agree. "Until now, no one has provided a model that combines the best of both worlds for working adult students," says Andrew Rosenfield, UNext chairman and CEO. "We are excited to work with an institution that has long believed in online education and shares our vision for educating career-oriented adults."

Ellis College of NYIT arrives at an opportune time for students. Thanks to the Internet's ubiquity, convenience and improving performance, nearly 750,000 U.S. students are currently enrolled in online courses, according to Eduventures Inc., a Boston-based market research firm. Moreover, online enrollment will grow a robust 30 percent this year, Eduventures predicts.
