Reality Check
After making waves on "Survivor," an alum sets course for NYIT.

She didn't win "Survivor," but Kimmi Kappenberg (B.F.A. '99) certainly has staying power.

The former reality TV show contestant is back at NYIT, pursuing her master's degree in communication arts.

But perhaps you already knew that. Kappenberg says she's still shocked that Survivor: Australian Outback fans have tracked down her address and phone number. In fact, she's received hundreds of random phone calls from across America. "Nothing prepares contestants for being an open book, where glimpses of you are considered the full picture," says Kappenberg.

Despite her small screen fame, Kappenberg's opportunities in the media have been limited. Survivor contestants are forbidden from appearing on any TV network besides CBS without the network's approval for two-and-a-half years.

For now, the media's loss is NYIT's gain.
