Eating Their Wheaties
Junior Orville Taylor won his fifth individual national championship at the 2002 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in San Angelo, Texas. In the last two seasons, Taylor has repeated as both the indoor and outdoor 400 meter champion and also won the 200 meter at the 2001 outdoor championship. Also at this year's championships, senior Nicolas Nester placed fourth in the 110 meter high hurdles and tied his own school record with a time of 13.68. Separately, junior Lloyd Brown placed fifth in the triple jump, setting the NYIT school record of 51 feet, 4 1/2 inches.
 
Catch Us If You Can
The women's 4x400 team-led by freshman Danette Deacon, sophomore Kerion Mathison, junior Selena McLaren and freshman Verona Mitchell-set a school record (3.48.41) at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
 
Nice Guy Finishes First
The Nassau County Sports Commission has tabbed NYIT's head track and field coach Peter Zinno as its Outstanding Male College Coach of the Year. Zinno has coached 31 athletes to individual NCAA Championships and has had 300 Division II All Americans during his 30-year tenure at NYIT. He was honored at an awards ceremony on April 15.
 
Slam-Dunk Season
The men's basketball team upset No. 1 seeded Adelphi University in the NYCAC (New York Collegiate Athletic Conference) Tournament but fell to Queens College in the tournament's championship game. The team finished the season 18-14 and nearly qualified for the NCAA tournament.
