Welcome to Your Magazine

Launching a successful magazine is a bit like directing a hit movie: You have to deliver compelling words and images that will keep eager audiences coming back for more.

But that's not all. We expect NYIT Magazine to serve as a vital link between NYIT alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends of the college. You're holding the premiere issue in your hands.

Published three times annually, NYIT Magazine describes how our graduates are building businesses, serving their communities, and returning to NYIT for continuing education and leading graduate programs. The magazine also demonstrates NYIT's commitment to technology, research and career-oriented professional education.

In this edition, we explore how savvy NYIT alumni are launching and managing successful small businesses (see "Sitting Pretty"). We also take a look at alumni who have impressive personal and professional achievements to share (see "Alumni News" and "Alumni Notes").

After you've had a chance to catch up with your fellow graduates, you can read about the latest developments at NYIT. In recent months, the college has embarked on a major technology initiative (our cover story), a Manhattan campus expansion ("Campus Buzz"), and several other projects that are winning rave reviews from the world of academia. Even New York Gov. George E. Pataki, our 2002 commencement speaker, is sitting up and taking notice.

Our primary goal for the months ahead is to work far more closely with you and other NYIT alumni. If you have news to share, please don't be shy. Send your personal update to alumni@nyit.edu. Or, send your story pitches and magazine feedback directly to me (jpanetti@nyit.edu).

Developing NYIT Magazine was no small task. The publication is a joint initiative between NYIT's Office of Communications and Marketing, and the Office of Alumni Relations.

In addition to leveraging NYIT's internal assets, we have reached out to seasoned talent in the publishing industry for assistance. We are pleased to work with design director Alexandria Keleher of K-Squared Graphics, publishing consultant Rhett Hall, and copy chief Marilou Marciano-Giammona. The trio has more than 35 years of combined experience at leading publishing companies like AOL Time Warner Inc., Hearst Magazines, CMP Media Inc. and Ziff Davis Media Inc.

Truth be told, I also am a veteran of Ziff Davis and CMP. I joined NYIT in February after holding senior-level editorial positions at several of the world's largest technology magazines.

I'm not a critic, but I know a good publication when I see one. Now, let me know how you feel about NYIT Magazine. Please send your feedback, questions and story ideas to my e-mail address below.
