What’s the Difference Between Pre-Medical and Combined B.S./D.O.?

What are my options for a medical degree at NYIT?

NYIT's Department of Life Sciences offers student two paths toward a medical degree:

What are the admission requirements?

Admission for the pre-medical program is the same as for any student entering the Life Sciences major at NYIT. Admission to the combined B.S./D.O. includes additional requirements:

  • students must submit SAT and/or ACT results with a combined SAT score of 1200 or above or an ACT total of at least 28.
  • In addition they must have a high school average of 90 or above and a high class standing.

How long is each program?

The pre-medical program is four years. The combined B.S./D.O. is a three-year undergraduate program, followed by four years at NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (with the B.S. degree awarded after completing a full year at College of Osteopathic Medicine).

If I am in the pre-medical program or the combined B.S./D.O., am I guaranteed admission to the College of Osteopathic Medicine?

No, there is no guaranteed admission to the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

  • Pre-medical student may -- if they pass certain requirements -- qualify for preferential treatment during the admission process to the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
  • Combined B.S./D.O. students may qualify admission to the College of Osteopathic Medicine if they pass certain requirements.

Do the programs follow the same curriculum?

No, there is a specific curriculum for each.
