Become a Tutor

Job Description

Peer tutors offer one-to-one or small group tutoring sessions in a broad range of academic subjects (e.g. math, physics, life sciences, etc.) and skill building techniques (e.g. time management and study skills), Tutors are requireed to have an expertise in the subject matter, previous tutoring and/or teaching experience, leadership skills, and the ability to relate to a diverse student population. A tutor must possess strong verbal and communications skills.

Under the supervision of the Learning Center staff, tutors are responsible for the following:

  • Tutoring individual and / or small group sessions
  • Preparing appropriate materials and exercises for tutoring sessions
  • Monitoring student progress
  • Maintaining accurate timesheets 
  • Participating in Learning Center staff meetings and training sessions
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Be currently enrolled at NYIT as an undergraduate with at least 2 semesters completed, or be a graduate student.
  • A or A- grade in the subject qualified to tutor
  • 3.5 cumulative GPA
  • Instructor recommendation (link to form below)
  • Dependable, patient, and compassionate personality
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to attend mandatory tutor training(s) and workshops

Hiring and Training:

  • Upon receipt of the documentation above along with academic transcripts and resume, qualified candidates for in-demand courses will be scheduled for an interview .
  • If offered position student must download, print, and complete a Student Employment Authorization Contract.
  • Peer Tutors must attend all mandatory training
