NYIT New York Campuses Pilot Smoke-Free Zones

Jan 15 2013

Smoke-Free Zone

In order to provide a healthy, safe, and comfortable environment, NYIT is introducing pilot smoke-free zones at its New York campuses. The new smoke-free zones in outdoor areas of each New York campus will be launched in the beginning of the spring 2013 semester:

  • On the NYIT-Old Westbury campus, the smoke-free zone will comprise all buildings and surrounding grounds of the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine, including its health care center, as well as the School of Health Professions. Tower House is also being designated smoke-free.
  • On the NYIT-Manhattan campus, the smoke-free zone is within 20 feet of the entrance of 26 W. 61st St.

Signs are being installed to designate the new smoke-free zones, and complete details can be found online. This program and policy is intended to be self-policing; a form can be found online for members of the NYIT community to report repeated violations of the policy. In accordance with the applicable law and NYIT policy, any individual can report a violation without fear of retaliation. We ask for the cooperation and understanding of all NYIT community members in creating a healthier campus environment for all. Currently, more than 800 campuses in the United States are entirely smoke-free, an increase of more than 50 percent from a year ago.
