NYIT hospitality students experienced a taste of luxury on Feb. 26 during an educational visit to the historic Garden City (N.Y.) Hotel. The event was organized by the Society of Hosteurs at NYIT-Old Westbury with the HOSP 420 Leadership and Employee Relations class.
The three-hour visit began with a tour led by Caroline Chen, the hotel's human resources generalist, and an overview of the multi-million dollar renovation that is currently underway on the landmark property built in the 1800s.
Lectures by hotel employees followed, including Jerry Rizzo, catering and events director, who discussed the complexities of delivering luxury events. James Capobianco (B.P.S. '11) talked about front desk operations and shared his experiences, which have included various promotions leading to his present managerial position. Ann Bonet, director of human Resources, gave job-hunting advice, such as interviewing strategies and resume tips.
