Troy A. Miller (M.A. '11)
Associate Dean, First-Year Admissions and Scholarship
Office: Enrollment, Communications, and Marketing
Campus: Old Westbury
Member of NYIT Since: 2007
For Troy A. Miller (M.A. '11), the best thing about his job is the people-both the students he meets in the admissions process and his colleagues.
"The same welcoming feeling I had on my first interview at NYIT has only amplified," Miller says. "I work with great people, I enjoy the work I'm doing, and it allows me quality time with family."
Miller was recently named associate dean of first-year admissions and scholarship and is hard at work testing new recruitment strategies. These include early action applications and extending NYIT's name recognition to high schools with little exposure to the New York metro area and Long Island. He's also using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to reach potential students.
"This is a generation interested in being part of the collective," Miller says. "That's why we're organizing events to bring them together."
His work ethic comes from years in the U.S. Army, during which he served in Operation Desert Storm. If there's one thing he learned, it's to "make a decision and own it."
Since joining NYIT, Miller has earned a master's degree in human resource management and has even brought his family into the fold. Two years ago, he found himself side by side with his mother, Sheila, in a class on labor management relations. She is slated to graduate with the same degree in 2012.
"She helped put me through school, and now it's my turn to help her," he says.
Miller hopes students are inspired by stories like these.
"I'm excited to be able to put my stamp on the admissions process," he says. "I like being out there sharing great NYIT stories and having an impact on first-generation college students."
