Campus: Manhattan Major: Electrical and Computer Engineering
Steavian Sampson was a 2013 fellows scholar of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the only student to receive this prestigious honor in the organization's Northeast region. Steavian's award recognizes his achievement in academics and dedication to serving NSBE and the local campus community. He served as site director for the NSBE 2013 Summer Engineering Experience for Kids in Denver, Colo., and New Orleans, La.
Why study at NYIT?
Because there are opportunities to travel to other NYIT global campuses. I fell in love with the Manhattan campus through my involvement as a student leader and the wonderful faculty and staff members who make it my second home.
During my first semester, I had the great privilege to be a part of the first group of students in years to re-establish the NSBE chapter at NYIT-Manhattan. It is truly a great joy for me to meet other students and have access to the organization's award-winning opportunities from community development to academic excellence.
With the help of God and my family, I aspire to become a politician. I hope to return home to shape and empower the future generation of Jamaica. NYIT has prepared me for this.
My interest in engineering stems from a number of things, from my love for math to my goal of advancing the small community my mother cherishes in Hartland St. Mary, Jamaica, and being a role model for those who live there. As Mahatma Gandhi says, "Be the change you want to see in this world." I will start by being the change I want to see in that community.
