Department: Mechanical Engineering School: Engineering and Computing Sciences Campus: Old Westbury
Member of NYIT Since: 1966
When Professor Rifat Tabi, Ph.D., is honored at the 2011 Employee Recognition Ceremony, it will be one of many milestones achieved during 45 years of teaching mechanical engineering at NYIT.
Career highlights have included winning the Best Teacher Award twice from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and serving as a Fulbright scholar in Turkey, where he lectured on advanced energy systems design and trained energy analysts at Istanbul Technical University. In 1990, Tabi was invited as a guest of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R. in Kazan.
The latter achievement has a personal twist. Tabi grew up in Crimea (now the Ukraine) and lost most of his family when the Russians under Joseph Stalin deported the country's Tatar/Turkic population to Siberia and Central Asia.
After all this time, what keeps Tabi going is his students-their successes make his career path all the more worth it.
