Palma Costello Cohen
Director of Annual Giving
Office: Development
Campus: Old Westbury
Member of NYIT Since: 2007
I have been working in higher education fundraising since 2003; I started at my alma mater, Hofstra University. Fundraising may sound very different from where I started out in social sciences and education, but working with people is what I always wanted. I was drawn to NYIT because of its global image and career-oriented training and teaching.
What is the Partners Fund?
NYIT's Partners (annual) fund provides vital support to students and programs. It supports student programs and scholarships, world-class faculty, academic programs, upgrades in computer labs, campus improvements, student life on campus, and green initiatives.
We also try to make sure we connect with alumni so they understand the importance of giving back to their alma mater. It's not always about financial support but being a part of a group of people who had similar experiences. Right now, it is important our alumni help each other in any way they can and it is easy because the alumni relations office holds wonderful events like cocktail hours, alumni ball games, wine tasting trips, and so much more. It's a lot of fun to get involved!
Are you finding the current economy makes it more difficult to get donations? .
Of course, the economy has had an impact on raising money but it is important that NYIT alumni know that every gift makes a difference. Don't ever think that a $25 gift does not change the life of students; it does. Think about the collective impact if every member of your graduating class gave $25 or $50.

What is the most unique item in your office?
We used to have a hula hoop hanging in the office, but it is gone now… .
