Nicholas' freshman campaign in 2008 was an outstanding effort as he was named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Rookie of the Year, finished in second place in the ECC championships, third in the NCAA Northeast Regionals, and 68th in the NCAA Division II National Championship meet. In addition, he was named the ECC Runner and Rookie of the Week twice and the ECAC Runner and Rookie of the week once. Nicholas also finished second at the Paul Short Invitational with a season-best time of 25:25 in the 8K race.

At Samoei High School in Kenya, he lettered in volleyball and cross country for four years.
