Nancy Bono
Associate Professor and Chair of Family Medicine at NYCOM
Department: Family Medicine
School: College of Osteopathic Medicine
Campus: Old Westbury
Member of NYIT Since: 1997
Why did you enter the field of medicine?
When I was younger, my brother was in a serious car accident, he was 5 years old. This triggered my instincts for medicine and helping people in need.
Why did you join NYCOM?
NYCOM's former Dean, Dr. Stanley Schiowitz, asked me to join the faculty; that I could help to make a difference here. I felt this was a wonderful opportunity to give back to my alma mater.
What are your responsibilities at NYCOM?
I am the Chairperson of the Family Medicine Department, so I have daily administrative duties I perform. I also work in the Academic Health Care Center and see patients. And of course, teach!
What has been your favorite NYCOM experience?
I love the excitement of orientation when the new students arrive. Their enthusiasm is motivating and their fear of 'what now? I'm in med school', makes me feel like when I was at that place too
On the other end, I love seeing them graduate at the hooding ceremony. When seeing their family members, so proud of the accomplishment that have been achieved, and the beginning of a new chapter in that students life, I know NYCOM has well prepared the new doctors for their clinical work and beyond.
