Mary Wezwick
Director of Finance
Office: NYCOM
Campus: Old Westbury
Member of NYIT Since: 2002
A licensed CPA who holds a master of science degree in taxation, Mary Wezwick welcomes a good challenge and the opportunity to use her experience, drive, and creative talents to “make things happen.” She joined NYIT in 2002 as a financial analyst, and then served as budget manager for five years before being promoted to the role of NYCOM’s director of finance in Spring 2009. During her tenure, she has played a key role in implementing the Oracle Human Resource Information System and streamlining the capital budget process. In her current position, she serves as the liaison between NYIT’s osteopathic medical school and the Offices of Financial Affairs and Human Resources. In collaboration with the dean and associate deans, she prepares NYCOM’s operating budget, ensures the effective use of funding sources, monitors expense activity, and works with colleagues to address financial accountability issues. One of her proudest achievements – and a great dividend to NYIT and the world at large – has been her participation in setting up a dedicated account for scholarships for economically disadvantaged students at NYCOM.
After a successful career at a public accounting firm, what attracted you to NYIT?
Six years of tax seasons! NYIT offered me a very interesting position in finance, along with great benefits such as our annuity plan, a beautiful campus, and proximity to home.
What is the most challenging/rewarding part of your job?
It’s not always easy to find funding for non-budgeted but valuable programs and projects. I enjoy the process of collaborating with colleagues to develop solutions to issues that ultimately benefit our students and all community members.
What is your favorite book?
The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. It was a great selection for NYIT’s First-Year Experience Summer Reading Program a few years ago.
What are some of your favorite vacation destinations?
My husband and I began traveling around Europe with friends in 2000, when we went to Paris and saw the Eiffel Tower lit up for the millennium—a “tower of light” in the “city of lights.” Since then, we’ve been to Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Milan, Lake Como, Venice, Amalfi, and Sicily in Italy; London several times (where our daughter, son-in-law, and grandson live); the British Virgin Islands, which we traveled through on a catamaran; Madrid, Seville, Ronda, Marbella, and Granada in Spain; skiing in Val d’Isere, France; and Dublin, Kinsale, the ring of Kerry, and the Dingle peninsula in Ireland.
