Why study at NYIT?
Opportunity. In the heart of New York City, there's an endless supply of interactions with the most diverse population in the world. The networking that commences in this city is amazing. I've met countless people who have positively influenced not only my future career and education, but have shaped me into the person I am today. NYIT supplies its students with a multitude of prospective internships, jobs, and volunteer workall while giving us an education of the highest quality.
As a transfer student, I observed a multitude of issues that I believe needed to be overcome by the student body as a whole. I felt a strong desire, almost necessity, to become a leader and organize students to resolve these issues together. To make a change, you have to aim straight for the top. Some consider this a bold move. I recognize it to be the only option.
As president, I hope to increase the number of engaged students on campus and improve communication and organization among the SGA, other clubs, and the student body.
I'm a member of the American Medical Student Association, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and the NYIT dodgeball team. I've volunteered in the emergency room at the Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in south Florida and completed an internship at the hospital.
The SGA election was definitely one of the most critical points of my academic career. I began as a transfer student from Palm Beach Community College who no one knew, moved on to be "the girl on the posters," and even further to become "Marisa, the girl running for president."
Now that I've won the election, I am known personally by hundreds of students on campus. If someone told me a year ago that I would move to New York City, thrive at NYIT, and become SGA presidentall within one yearI would probably call her crazy. When I take a step back, I am so humbled that NYIT students elected me as their official representative.
Emergency room physician or trauma surgeon.
I'm actually very shy. It's in my nature, when placed in a situation outside of my comfort zone, to close up and keep quiet. This is something I've been working on, and the SGA campaign has definitely assisted me in breaking down walls I didn't think were possible.
Surfing, yoga, biking, playing music (guitar, electric bass guitar, and piano), traveling, and anything else that gives an adrenaline rush.
