From NYIT's Weekly Update:
Lenore Walsh knows what it means to have a active, and at times hectic, life. She works closely with NYIT’s 220 students-athletes to promote their academic, athletic, leadership, and social skills -- and helps them try to find a healthy balance in their busy lives. Her responsibilities also include scheduling games for NYIT’s athletic programs, overseeing the department’s budget and scholarships, coordinating several annual athletics events, and serving as an advisor on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. For the past seven years, she has also taught the College Success Seminar, which provides freshmen tools to make a smooth transition into college. A true champion of NYIT students, her efforts have earned her the Old Westbury campus Student Government Association’s Spirit Award (2005) and Administrator of the Year Award (2006-2007).
Was it always your goal to work with college athletes?
Actually, no ... I earned degrees in marketing and business administration and always envisioned a career at a big Manhattan firm. But my senior year of college opened my eyes to the business of sports—and in particular, college sports—and I decided to “go for it.” Prior to joining NYIT, I was the director of marketing and promotions for the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. I really enjoy helping NYIT’s student-athletes reach their goals both in the classroom and on the field.
What's on your wish list for NYIT?
I would like to see NYIT as the premier institution for academics and athletics. I have seen so much progress over the last decade and now is a great time to be at NYIT. The new Theobald Science Center and NYIT Auditorium on Broadway are amazing. Of course, I am most excited about the planned expansion of the Old Westbury campus Student Activity Center. We are adding new athletic teams and space for locker rooms and administrative offices.
What do you think about the softball team's record-breaking season?
Coach Christianson has transformed the softball program into one of the top contenders in the East Coast Conference. He has put NYIT softball on the map and it is becoming a very competitive program in Division II softball. The team is on its way to becoming a NCAA powerhouse! Go Bears!
How important is community service to the athletics program?
A key component of the athletics mission is a commitment to enriching the surrounding communities through service. We get involved with all types of charitable organizations and causes—Ronald McDonald House, Make-A-Wish Foundation, breast and prostate cancer research, and many others. It’s also an opportunity for the student-athletes to bond off the field.
What sports did you play in school? Who are your favorite teams?
I was a competitive swimmer and played lacrosse. I also love football and am a big fan of the Miami Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Steelers.
