From NYIT's Weekly Update:
It takes a creative, detail-oriented, and well-rounded individual to organize an event that will leave prospective college students and their families with a positive impression and feeling that NYIT is the right choice. Jill Brown, who herself is pursuing an NYIT degree in interdisciplinary studies, is helping to create that “experience” and lead others on the path to achieving their educational and professional goals.
What are your principal responsibilities at NYIT? How many events are you responsible for?
I handle events for the Office of Enrollment Services—approximately 20 throughout the year. The events range from Open House and Preview Day, each of which attract about 1,200 guests (students and their families), to our weekly staff meetings. I am also responsible for the daily online application import process, all changes and updates to the Admissions Web pages, and coordination of the High School Opportunity Program. I work closely with the Office of Publications and Advertising to produce recruitment and promotional materials.
How do you keep the events fresh and exciting year to year?
I look at events from the students’ point of view and try to incorporate aspects of college life that matter most to them—it’s all about connecting. Students often attend more than one NYIT event, so we tailor each one of them to showcase the diversity of our academic, athletic, social, and residential offerings.
What motivates you/how do you motivate colleagues with whom you work?
I am motivated by the desire to be successful. Watching an event come together or seeing a new student with a smile excites me. I believe my enthusiasm is infectious and that I am a good team builder, which is important as my colleagues and I prepare for and welcome students to our campuses.
Describe a poignant experience you have had working with an NYIT student.
While on vacation in Aruba in December 2007, I met an Aruba resident who told me he was interested in attending a New York university with a prestigious architecture program. Of course, I encouraged him to explore NYIT. He did so and was admitted to NYIT. We still keep in contact; he is thoroughly enjoying living in New York and studying architecture and design.
What are your interests/hobbies outside of NYIT?
I love country music, walks with my husband and our dog in the park, and going ATV riding and snorkeling. Once a year, I organize and run a golf tournament with my dad to raise money for a high school scholarship.
