From NYIT's Weekly Update:
Jennifer Mitchell brings energy and a passion for art and design to work every day. She earned a bachelor of fine arts from the School of Visual Arts, and has worked at Sotheby's and the Washburn Gallery in New York City and the Abbe Museum in Bar Harbor, Maine. Today, she helps elevate NYIT's academic and cultural profile.
What are your principal responsibilities here at NYIT?
I coordinate the School of Architecture and Design's architects and designers lecture series. Past lecturers have included world-renowned architects such as Mario Botta, William Pedersen, Cesar Pelli, and Richard Porro, as well as many NYIT faculty members who have gained national recognition for their work. I also serve as curator for NYIT's Gallery 61 (at the Manhattan campus) and help promote those exhibitions.
What projects are you working on?
I invite everyone to visit our current exhibition, Deployment: Iraq, which features correspondence and photographs of NYIT adjunct professor Henry Chin-Hong during his 2004 tour of duty in Baghdad. I am also working this year with NYIT's student-run Bear Hug Club on their charitable efforts.
What projects are you looking forward to?
Chuck Hoberman, whose work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, will present his robotic models and design practices on Feb. 24. Judith DiMaio, dean of NYIT's School of Architecture and Design, and Distinguished Architectural Historian Kurt Forster will lecture on April 16. NYIT will welcome Robert Ivy, editor-in-chief of Architectural Record, on April 23.
What are your hobbies/interests outside NYIT?
Artist studio visits, painting with watercolors, sailing with my husband, raising and releasing Monarch butterflies, gardening, researching artists' interviews through the Archives of American Art, community service in Maine, and visiting museums everywhere I travel. I also read and speak French fluently.
What are some of your favorite films and books?
I love the films Word Play and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I am currently reading White Flags of Surrender by Lili Hahn and Fairfield Porter: A Life in Art by Justin Spring.
