Janine Lee is the winner of the Astoria Federal iPad Competition, chosen for her descriptive essay of what inspired her to pursue a major and career in computer science. The competition encourages young women to pursue and excel in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
"As a woman going into the tech field, I want to change the way women are viewed in society," said Lee in her essay describing a fictional story about a princess in distress. Her career goal is to design new software and games that feature interesting female characters.
Why computer science?
As a young girl, I loved playing video games, especially the game Tekken. I used to go to the arcades with my dad and I would beat everyone playing the game. I joined lots of tournaments and became one of the best players on Long Island! I would love to be able to create more games that people can enjoy. Since I really like computers and video games, I'm interested in learning how they're all created.
It's a wonderful campus near my hometown. During my tour of the campus, I learned a lot about the school. I found that NYIT not only specializes in technology, but that the university also encourages and teaches the arts. Since software design includes technology and art, I thought this was great for the computer science program.
Activities on campus
I just joined the IEEE club and am looking to join other engineering clubs. I see many clubs on campus and want to get more involved.
Advice to students deciding on colleges
Visit the colleges you are interested in to help with your decision. Going to orientation and other events is a great introduction to college. They are a lot of fun, too! Definitely try to register for courses as quickly as possible before they fill up.
