Chelseyann Bipat
The Bahamas
Class Of: 2014
Campus: Old Westbury
Major: Mechanical engineering, concentration on aerospace
Chelseyann Bipat may be far away from her island home, but at NYIT-Old Westbury, she is close to something near to her heart: pursuing a degree that will fulfill her dream of someday designing and building fuel-efficient spacecraft and airplanes. A member of the new NYIT women’s tennis team, Chelseyann has made lots of friends on the court, in class, and at the residence halls in Old Westbury during her first semester. “So far, the work is manageable, and we all study together,” she notes.
In November, she won NYIT’s third annual Astorial Federal Laptop Competition for her video encouraging women to enter engineering and computing science fields and sharing her plans after she gets her NYIT degree. Pictured above is Chelseyann (center) receiving her prize.
Why did you choose to study at NYIT?
The engineering programs and the small student population compared to other schools attracted me to NYIT. Also, being in New York allows me to be closer to some of my family members who live here.
How did you become interested in mechanical engineering and aerospace?
I've always been interested in aircraft. When I was little, I wanted to be a pilot. As I got older, I became very interested in physics and math. I love those subjects. Mechanical engineering and aerospace combines them.
What kind of experiences have you had at NYIT?
I've had some great dorm experiences, and made a lot of close friends here. I've also learned to adjust to college life and developed better time management skills based on my workload. I hope to be involved in more activities next semester. Being a student-athlete was definitely a great experience this semester. It was really fun, and I got to meet great people on the team!
What are your career aspirations after graduation?
After graduation, I hope to pursue another degree then get a job in the aerospace testing field, where I can research ways to improve sustainability in air and spacecraft.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies include listening to music, playing tennis, drawing, and watching TV. My favorite shows are "House," "NCIS," and "Outsourced."
