Moving from Marquette, Mich., to Long Island, N.Y., has proven the perfect career opening for Alyson Daniels, customer relations coordinator for NYIT Dining Services. When her husband, Eric Daniels, was accepted into the NYIT Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2015, she relished the prospect of working in one of the world's largest hospitality hubs.
"NYIT has provided a great opportunity for me because the culture itself is so different from what I'm used to," Daniels says. "Coming from a small town in Maine, I never imagined myself to be living so close to someplace as culturally diverse as New York City. Being part of the NYIT community really adds a global dimension to my resumé."
Daniels, who was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine, earned bachelor's and global master's degrees in business administration from Southern New Hampshire University. To help pay for college, she worked as a banquet server at a hotel and quickly discovered a talent for hospitality services. After graduation, she moved to Marquette to work as a hotel banquet manager. The experience expanded her knowledge of the food and beverage industry as well as the daily operations of a small business.
At NYIT, Daniels was initially hired as an administrative assistant for the NYIT de Seversky Mansion. As customer relations coordinator, her role is to support the NYIT Dining Services team in planning educational initiatives at the mansion and campus eateries, and to build relationships with faculty, staff, student groups, and the surrounding community.
For example, NYIT's Cast Iron Chef competition will be used as a model for future initiatives due to the camaraderie it fosters among departments. In fall 2013, NYIT Dining Services will debut Ultimate Cast Iron Chef, where the event's past three winning teams will compete against each other. Other ideas in the works are cooking demonstrations, classes, bake-offs, and lectures.
"In my position, I'm really looking forward to creating that first-name basis relationship with more people," Daniels says.
When she has spare time, Daniels enjoys crafting and using Pinterest, spending time outdoors, and baking.
