SoECS Students Make Whirlwind Trip to Abu Dhabi Cybersecurity Conference students at Abu Dhabi campus

On an otherwise ordinary day in March, Electrical and Computer Engineering students Nicole Gutierrez and Nicole Dunn (both class of 2014) received an email that contained a big surprise: the Dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences (SoECS), Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D., was inviting them both to attend NYIT’s first Global Cybersecurity Conference, to take place in Abu Dhabi on 26 March. “It was really unexpected!” said Gutierrez. The students were chosen based on recommendations from their professors and Dean Anid.
Arriving in Abu Dhabi the morning before the conference, Gutierrez and Dunn were soon ready to explore. They hopped into a taxi and headed to the NYIT-Abu Dhabi campus, settling in naturally and easily with the Abu Dhabi-based students. Reported Dunn, “The campus was lovely, and the students and faculty there were extremely welcoming.” “The community there seemed very close-knit,” agreed Gutierrez. She added, “The students in Abu Dhabi were very similar to the students in Old Westbury. They were very easy to talk to.”
Gutierrez and Dunn got up early the next day to join their Abu Dhabi colleagues at the Global Cybersecurity Conference, organized by SoECS. “The conference was very informative,” said Gutierrez. “Experts talked about various things, from possible approaches to current cybersecurity issues to the kinds of things they are looking for in job applicants. They provided a very real perspective on the types of problems one should expect when entering the cybersecurity field.”
After spending a second evening with fellow NYIT students, Gutierrez and Dunn headed to Abu Dhabi International Airport later that night. A total of about 40 hours in Abu Dhabi had introduced them to a new part of the world, a place where they could easily identify colleagues and stimulating professional opportunities. “I feel honored,” said Dunn. “NYIT granted me the opportunity not only to attend the eye-opening cybersecurity conference, but to experience travel to a new country as well. It was an extremely enriching trip that I hope more students will get to make in the future.”
Dean Anid noted, “Global education includes bringing faculty and students from NYIT’s various campuses together at meaningful events such as the Global Cybersecurity Conference. These opportunities broaden our students’ outlook, enrich their NYIT experience, and prepare them for the global challenges of the 21st century.”
