NYIT Cyber Security Expert Discuss Social Media and Civil Liberties

Vancouver, Canada- Feb. 22, 2012—Granting students the opportunity to network with some of the most renowned business professionals in British Columbia, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) sponsored a series of cyber security presentations on Feb. 21.

Featured speakers Raj Goel (B.S. ’94) and NYIT cyber security advisor Paul Stirpe, Ph.D., addressed the importance of social media and its implications in business and security before audiences at the Surrey and Vancouver Boards of Trade.

“People typically do not read privacy statements and are often not aware of the degree to which personal information is collected and used,” said Stirpe, Co-Founder of Letse, LLC, indicating that the over-collection of customer and subscriber data online might be detrimental to both a corporation and a customer. In his Vancouver Board of Trade presentation, “Information Technology Trends and Their Impact on You,” he ultimately recommended that open debates on reasonable rules and guidelines are for data collection and use are necessary to safeguard civil liberties.

Later in the day, Goel, Chief Technical Officer and Co-founder of Brainlink International, Inc., brought his Surrey presentation on social media and cloud computing privacy concerns to students at NYIT-Vancouver, along with an additional seminar on “How to Increase Your Social Capital.”

Businesses in attendance at the events included KPMG and Molson Coors Canada.
