NYIT-Nanjing Professor Presents Lecture on Myths of the American Market

On Sept. 20, NYIT-Nanjing Associate Professor of Management and Economics James Nolt, Ph.D., gave a presentation to faculty members and students at the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT on "The Myth of the Market in Contemporary American Culture." His talk asserted that myths of the market are among the most powerful and prevalent of modern moral and political ideology. Rather than the market as a venue of fairness, efficiency and stability, he presented the perspective of a classical political economy (espoused by philosopher-economists Adam Smith, Karl Marx, and John Stuart Mill), where markets are inherently political battlegrounds of powerful interests.

Nolt received his Ph.D. in political science from the University of Chicago. He has served as a Harvard Senior Fellow and a member of the World Policy Institute. He is an expert on international political economies and issues of global security, with a focus on United States-East Asia relations.
