On Aug. 25, 117 incoming freshmen attended the 2013 new student orientation at NYIT-Nanjing. The event was hosted by Campus Dean Monique Taylor, Ph.D., and Associate Campus Dean Keh Kwek. All English Language Institute (ELI) instructors and Dean’s Office staff were on hand to welcome the students.
Associate Dean Kwek delivered opening remarks, followed by a welcome from Dean Taylor, who advised students about the seriousness of the NYIT Academic Integrity policy. Tony Lei Tong, Associate Director of the Office of Career Services and Alumni Relations, and Beverly Butcher, Ph.D., director of the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT), introduced students to the functions and activities organized by their respective departments. Dr. Butcher invited students to participate in center events in order to enhance their levels of English proficiency and to “build character.” Finally, ELI Coordinator Tom Speirs provided an overview of the intensive English program that will run for four weeks before the start of the regular semester. Speirs challenged the group not to be shy or embarrassed while practicing their spoken English. “Without courage there is no success,” he told the students who could be heard repeating the phrase as he wrote it in large letters on the chalkboard at the front of the room.
"It is exciting to welcome this cohort of students to the NYIT NUPT 3 + 1 program and to the start of our 2013 English Language Institute," said Taylor. "We are proud that this is the first group of students to study NYIT NUPT majors that have been approved by the Beijing Ministry of Education. We have come out on the successful side of an extremely competitive and highly selective process for joint Chinese foreign cooperations. This is a great leap forward for NYIT’s vision of a global university.”
