Professor at NYIT-Nanjing Awarded Grant to Study Contemporary Metaethics

In December, Xuetai Qi, adjunct assistant professor of philosophy at NYIT-Nanjing, was awarded a research grant by the National Department of Education of China for his research project, "Current State of Contemporary Metaethics in the West: Theme-based Studies."

His review of Mengzi: With Selections from Traditional Commentaries and The Essential Mengzi: Selected Passages with Traditional Commentary was published in the Fall 2010 issue of the APA Newsletter on Teaching Philosophy. His articles, "The A Priori Nature of Universal Ethics and Morality" and "Reasons, Sentiments and Normativity of Morality" were published in the November issue of the Journal of Social Sciences and the October issue of Morality and Civilization, respectively.

NYIT-Abu Dhabi Professor Awarded Ph.D. in Computer Law

Stephen Blythe, J.D., Ph.D., professor of law in the School of Management, NYIT-Abu Dhabi, has been awarded a Ph.D. in computer law from the University of Hong Kong's School of Law. His dissertation was entitled "An Alternative Theory of E-Commerce Law."

NYIT-Bahrain Conducts Blood Drive

Students and faculty volunteers helped coordinate a blood drive on Nov. 25, 2010, for the Salminaya Medical Complex in Manama, Bahrain. In a letter to NYIT-Bahrain, Fakhriya A. Darwish, head of the Salmaniya Medical Complex Central Blood Bank, wrote that the group “rendered exemplary humanitarian service that no money can buy. Their gift of life will go a long way in saving lives and helping the diseased.”

Publications by Professor Garas of NYIT-Bahrain

Samy N. Garas, Ph.D., assistant professor of accounting at NYIT-Bahrain, had his doctoral dissertation distributed to 1,000-plus participants at the 17th annual World Islamic Banking Conference (WIBC) in Bahrain, Nov. 22-24, 2010. Faculty members and students from NYIT-Bahrain attended. In addition, Garas' article, "The Performance of Shari'a Supervisory Boards within Islamic Financial Institutions in the Gulf Cooperation Council Countries," was published in Corporate Ownership & Control, Vol. 8, Issue 1, Fall 2010.

Richard Pizer, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for NYIT, and Richard Cotton, Country Director of the British Council, UAE, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to improve the level in English of students applying for admission to degree programs offered at the university.

NYIT Alumnus Continues to Lead Relief Efforts in Haiti

Six months after Haiti’s devastating earthquake, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) alumnus Father Rick Frechette (D.O. ’98) continues to be at the forefront of relief efforts. Frechette, a physician, American Catholic priest, community organizer, and alumnus of NYIT’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM), has worked with Compassion Weavers: The St. Luke Haiti Mission to help build 4,000 square meters of campground for displaced children, which opened this month and is serving an initial group of 350 children. NYIT-Nanjing to Host “Crossing Borders” Conference

NYIT and the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) will be hosting the "Crossing Borders: Traveling, Teaching, and Learning in a Global Age," conference between April 16-17, 2011 in Nanjing. The conference explores a variety of topics that touch upon the "crossing borders" theme, including teaching online vs. traditional courses, ESL courses, teaching abroad, and translations, multilingualism, texting/IM and cyberculture. NYIT’s Student Exchange on the Rise

NYIT’s student exchange between our global campuses is on the rise. This fall NYIT’s New York campuses welcome 61 students from our campus in Nanjing, four students from Amman, four from Bahrain and three from our campus in Vancouver. In addition, NYIT will host two exchange students from Denmark and one from Spain. NYIT-Vancouver’s commencement ceremony and graduation lunch was held on May 21, 2010. The class of 2010 included 27 graduates who celebrated along with 48 guests including friends, family and alumni. The ceremony and lunch were held at the picturesque Sage Bistro at The University of British Columbia.
