NCLEX Program Going Paperless in 2014

In an effort to improve effectiveness and efficiency, the NCLEX program will “go green” and transition to a paperless program. In the past 10 years, Internet access has largely replaced print-based materials for information gathering, information distribution and transactions. NCSBN can more expediently and reliably deliver the same information through electronic means. The paperless initiative will take place starting in the beginning of 2014.

The communication of the paperless initiative will be provided in three phases: impacts to the program before the exam (registration), impacts to exam day processes and impacts to processes after the exam. Below is a list of informational materials and registration processes that will be impacted by the transition to paperless before the exam.

NCLEX Examination Candidate Bulletin

  • The NCLEX Examination Candidate Bulletin will no longer be distributed in a hard copy version. Boards of nursing, candidates and education programs will access the Candidate Bulletin via the NCSBN website.
  • An updated Candidate Bulletin will be posted on the NCSBN website in December 2013 and will reflect all changes regarding the paperless initiative.

Eights Steps of the NCLEX

  • This Candidate Bulletin insert will no longer be distributed in a hard copy version. This abbreviated reference guide to NCLEX processes will be enhanced to include additional information and will also be available on the NCSBN website in December 2013.

Candidate Bulletin At-A-Glance

  • Due to the enhancements of the Eight Steps of the NCLEX, as well as the continued accessibility of the Candidate Bulletin, the At-A-Glance piece will no longer be published as either an electronic or hard copy version.

Money Order, Certified Check and Cashier Check Payments

  • Money order, certified check and cashier check payments will no longer be accepted. This change affects two registration processes:
    1. Currently, individual candidates and third parties can complete a web-based registration form, and then print and send via mail the confirmation page with one of the three paper payment options (money order, certified check or cashier check) to Pearson VUE. This form and process will no longer be available after Dec. 31, 2013.
    2. Currently, individual candidates and third parties can complete a paper registration form (a bubble sheet or scan form) and then send the completed form with one of the three paper payment options (money order, certified check or cashier check) to Pearson VUE. This form will no longer be printed and distributed. Complete paper registration forms must be postmarked on or before Dec. 31, 2013, to be accepted.
  • Candidates and third parties utilizing any currently approved paper payment method (money order, certified check or cashier check) should be encouraged to transition to the registration process listed below to avoid delays of returned registrations and unusable payments (e.g., unaccepted money orders).
  • Beginning Jan. 1, 2014, all candidates and third parties will be required to register and pay for exam registrations through the Pearson VUE website or over the phone (866.496.2539) with credit or debit cards.

As mentioned above, information on the paperless initiative will be communicated in three phases. Be on the lookout in October for the second phase of communication: information pertaining to exam day processes impacted by the transition to paperless.
