EMBA Students Visit West Point

The Eisenhower Leadership Center at West Point provided the students with a campus tour, followed by classroom instruction in the U.S. military’s approach to leadership. Students then took part in team-building activities involving natural stresses like cold and physical challenges.

Scott X. Liu, Ph.D., Executive Director of NYIT’s Center of International Business Studies (CIBS) and Associate Dean for Global Programs in the NYIT School of Management, stated that even after several visits to West Point, he continually gains insights about true leadership every time he goes.

Associate Professor Joanne Scillitoe, Ph.D., Recommended for the Fulbright Specialist Roster

The School of Management is pleased to announce that Associate Professor Joanne Scillitoe, Ph.D., has been recommended by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) and the Institute of International Education’s Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES), for the Fulbright Specialist Roster. The roster comprises all candidates who are eligible to be matched with incoming project requests from overseas academic institutions for Fulbright Specialists. As a roster candidate, she will be considered for project requests that require her expertise.

Abu Dhabi Student Researchers Present Work to Old Westbury Faculty

Student researchers from NYIT-Abu Dhabi’s M.B.A. program visited the U.S. last week to present their work at a conference organized by the International Journal of Arts and Sciences (I.J.A.S.) at Harvard University. After their conference presentation, Robin Carvalho and Aya Wadi (class of 2015) visited NYIT-Old Westbury to share their findings with a select group of School of Management (SoM) faculty. Dean Jess Boronico, who hosted Robin and Aya, congratulated them on their achievement, calling them “exemplars of student leadership at its finest.”

SoM faculty and other guests engaged in high-level analysis with Robin and Aya as all examined the students’ work on how foreign universities in the U.A.E. should present themselves via their websites. Faculty members questioned the students’ research methodology and statistical analysis, which was carried out under the mentorship of SoM faculty member and marketing specialist Vanaja Menon Vadakepat, Ph.D. Aya and Robin responded as professionals, explaining the details of the research and asserting the validity of their findings.

Dean Boronico noted that the students did more than simply gather and analyze data, important though that work is; they also used their findings to make a measurable impact on NYIT’s website. “We have spoken with leaders at NYIT-Abu Dhabi about our findings,” said Robin, “and the Abu Dhabi page of NYIT’s website has implemented changes as a result.” For example, social media links are now featured prominently. “Research in the School of Management is not just an exercise,” affirmed the dean.

Dean Boronico also highlighted the collaboration between SoM faculty and administrators in Abu Dhabi with colleagues in New York. “The close support we have given these students, from both New York and Abu Dhabi, is an example of the interactions that occur among the multiple campuses where the School of Management has operations. We encourage exchange among both faculty and students.”

Aya and Robin’s early research, including careful data collection and analysis, resulted in their first paper, “Consumers Perceptions: Gap Analysis on University Websites,” which they presented at the International Conference on Technology and Business Management (ICTBM-14) in Dubai in March.

Encouraged by the reception their work received on that occasion, the students refined their work, now titled “Perceptions of College Websites: Abu Dhabi Market Response,” in preparation for the I.J.A.S. conference. The I.J.A.S. accepted their presentation after double-blind peer review process; most other participants were university faculty members.

Robin and Aya will return to Abu Dhabi with experience of U.S. academic culture, but also with connections to the SoM’s New York-based faculty. In the immediate future, they are working with their mentor to publish their work for an academic audience. At the same time, NYIT staff members in Abu Dhabi and New York will continue to assess and implement the students' findings as part of ongoing efforts to communicate with NYIT’s non-U.S. student population.

SoM Grad Students Examine U.S.-China Relations

Five students at NYIT’s School of Management (SoM) have spent three days becoming acquainted with the formulation of U.S. foreign policy at a Washington, D.C. conference aimed at Chinese graduate students. The program, “United States Foreign Policy Colloquium,” is sponsored by the National Committee on United States-China Relations (N.C.U.S.C.R).  Select graduate students from the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.) were invited to interact firsthand with U.S. political leaders and government officials, as well as to network with other P.R.C. graduate students.

SoM students Liu Hongxia (Executive M.B.A.), Gao Yaguang (M.B.A.), Zhang Chengyao (M.B.A.), Xia Wenqiang (M.B.A.), and Xiong Jiaqun (M.B.A.) attended the colloquium at the George Washington University Elliott School of International Affairs, 28-30 May. They learned of the opportunity through NYIT’s Center for International Business Studies.

The SoM students met Mr. Stephen A. Orlins and Ms. Jan Berris, president and vice-president, respectively, of the N.C.U.S.C.R.; Mr. Kin Moy, deputy assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, responsible for relations with China, Mongolia, and Taiwan; and leaders and staff members of various influential organizations throughout the capital. The students also visited the Chinese Embassy, where Minister Lu Kang and others inspired and encouraged them.

“One of my favorite parts was the site visit, a briefing at an organization involved in U.S. foreign policy,” said Ms. Liu. She visited the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where she met with the executive director of the Global Intellectual Property Center, Mr. Jasper MacSlarrow. Her classmate Mr. Xia visited the Nature Conservancy, where he and his group discussed environmental policy with leaders there.

The National Committee on United States-China Relations is a leading non-partisan public affairs organization devoted to building meaningful relationships between the United States and China, including among private citizens. NYIT paid tribute to its president, Mr. Orlins, with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree in 2012, noting his important role in enhancing the U.S.-China relationship.

NYIT Celebrates Simulated Trading Floor and Business Partnership with Voya Financial

New York Institute of Technology dedicated its simulated trading floor yesterday, ringing the opening bell and joining Voya Financial leaders in a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the room’s state-of-the-art technology and role in creating career-ready business professionals.

NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., thanked Voya Financial Chairman and CEO Rodney O. Martin Jr. and Voya Financial Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer Kevin D. Silva, an NYIT trustee, for the firm’s support of the space. 

“It’s a good occasion to highlight the partnership of higher education and the corporate world,” Guiliano said.

The room contains five large wall-mounted high-resolution monitors, a Smart Board, ticker tapes and an electronic stock board that displays market information, financial data, and streaming broadcasts of financial internet and cable offerings. Computers that were once set up in traditional-style tiered levels are now clustered in group stations around the room, providing a real-world atmosphere of trading kiosks prevalent on professional trading floors. Numerous software suites are available that reflect existing and emergent industry trends, including Bloomberg, Compustat, EViews and Crystal Ball, and various other ERP, risk management, and optimization tools.

“The NYIT School of Management emphasis is on leadership, group dynamics and collaborative learning spaces that reflect an emerging trend in the way that businesses globally transact their services,” said Dean Jess Boronico, Ph.D. “The room was designed to mimic that type of transaction at and across tables, and simultaneously provide students with opportunities to engage technology in new and innovative ways. Moreover, our distributed learning technologies permit us to interact with and network around the globe with our partner institutions and international professional affiliates.

Boronico said he and other NYIT representatives visited trading floors prior to settling on designs for NYIT’s facilities. Students helped in the design elements of the space so it reflects their priorities and preferences.

“Our students are integrated into the fabric of all we do,” said Boronico. “They take leadership roles and are invested in decisions that help improve our programs and facilities.”

The Student Managed Portfolio program is among numerous initiatives the simulated trading floor supports. The program allows students to research and invest in global firms as they hone their risk management and financial analytical skills. The trading floor will also serve as the setting for financial boot camps, certification programs for industry professionals, and networking events. Along with NYIT’s Small Business Incubator, which hosts student and alumni entrepreneurs, the simulated trading floor plays a key role in the university’s professional enrichment and experiential learning opportunities.

It’s inspiring to see a teaching environment like this,” said Martin, noting the importance of providing students with an opportunity to manage a portfolio and gain real-world trading experience in an interactive, dynamic environment.

The event also celebrated Voya Financial's recent name change from ING U.S., a rebranding that seeks to build on the firm’s reputation as a leader in retirement, investments, and insurance.

NYIT's Old Westbury Chapter of the Society of Hosteurs was given the exciting opportunity to experience a LEEDS-certified green hotel on April 24.  

The site visit to Viana Hotel and Spa on Brush Hollow Road in Westbury was led by James Henry Dunne, M.A., J.D., of the School of Managment, along with NYIT hospitality alumna and Corporate Sales Manager Alicia Montefusco, Viana General Manager Takir Rafiq, and Assistant Manager Handi Shindi.

The hotel executives graciously provided a tour of the property, along with a comprehensive review of how to attain the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design property certification. The tour was followed by a board room presentation by Montefusco on corporate sales techniques and the application of sales technology.

NYIT Graduate Students Win HR Competition

Congratulations to the NYIT team that won the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Northeast Regional Case Competition for graduate students, April 11-12 in Providence, R.I. They include (left to right) Brendan Feifer, Stephanie Trinidad, Ingrid Bryni, Yuqing (Kenneth) Geng, and Rebecca Weisz.

Team NYIT won $2,500 to share among them and individual free registration for each member to attend SHRM's annual conference in Orlando this June. All students on NYIT's team are enrolled in the M.S. in Human Resources Management and Labor Relations program and are members of NYIT's SHRM chapter.

During the competition, graduate and undergraduate teams competed separately based on a specially-written case revealed on the first morning of the competition. They had four hours to create a 15-minute PowerPoint presentation of their case analysis and recommendations as well as an executive summary. A panel of HR judges scored the presentations and selected two finalists among the graduate teams. In the second round, NYIT faced off against New York University. Each team had less than an hour to give a final presentation judged by another panel.

NYIT's team began to prepare for the competition with their faculty advisor William Ninehan, director of NYIT's HR development program, this past November. They held practice sessions with faculty, alumni, and HR professionals to gain feedback and improve their presentation skills. This year was the first time that NYIT competed.

NYIT Inducts Students into Mu Kappa Tau Honor Society

NYIT business students achieved a milestone on May 22 when they were inducted into the Mu Kappa Tau Marketing Honor Society in Manhattan. The 11 inductees represented NYIT campuses in New York, Amman, and Bahrain, and included four new members. Mu Kappa Tau recognizes excellence in academic studies for graduate and undergraduate students.

Faculty members in attendance at the ceremony included Dean Jess Boronico, Associate Deans Jim Murdy and Diamando Afxentiou, Professor Abram Poczter, Assistant Professor Veneta Sotiropoulos, and Associate Professor Deborah Cohn, who presided over the ceremony.

College Fed Challenge

College Fed Challenge is a team competition for undergraduate college students sponsored by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Eastern Economic Association. It is intended to encourage students to learn more about the U.S. macro economy, the Federal Reserve System and the implementation of monetary policy. It is also aimed at spurring interest in economics and finance as subjects for advanced study and the basis for a career.

  • Earn 3 credits for Fall 2011 (ECON 203/BUSI 402)
  • Learn about Economic Indicators & Monetary Policy and compete with local institutions on economic outlook

Opportunity and Passion Define SOM Entrepreneurship Event

NYIT's School of Management hosted "An Evening with the Entrepreneurs: A Networking and Learning Opportunity" on March 7 at the Manhattan campus. Moderated by Professor William Lawrence, Ph.D., the event featured three NYIT alumni who spoke to students and faculty about their entrepreneurial successes and how their NYIT degrees helped shape their careers.

"If you go into business, one of the hardest things is to be objective," said Lawrence during his opening remarks. "But when you get an idea, follow through, and turn it into a business, that's the best feeling you can get."

The first speaker, Jennifer Ulsheimer (M.B.A. '04), horticulturist for the Town of Babylon (N.Y.), attended NYIT to earn an M.B.A., which was essential to advancing in her career. As a student, she created the business plan that would serve as the framework of her current posting as head of a 27-acre garden on Long Island.

"Go for it," said Ulsheimer, when discussing the need to follow one's professional dreams. "No matter how hard you think it won't happen, it's there for you."

Ramon Ray (B.S. '07), editor and founder of smallbiztechnology.com, spoke to the value of client relationships, overdelivering on expectations, and using failure as a learning process that leads to success. A "technology evangelist," Ray launched his company with the goal of helping other small businesses achieve greater prosperity through technology.

The final speaker, Russell Makofsky (M.B.A. '09) of New York City Chess Inc., urged future entrepreneurs to be prepared to seek out opportunity. "Every single thing in our lives is an entrepreneurial venture," he told attendees. "If you believe in your product and yourself, you'll be able to accomplish great things."

The event also featured a Q&A session as well as a buffet dinner provided by NYIT Dining Services.

School of Management Leads Effort to Partner with South Korean University

NYIT is working to create dual-degree offerings in hospitality management, business programs, and study abroad exchanges in partnership with Hallym University in South Korea. Robert J. Koenig, Ed.D., associate dean for the School of Management (pictured, front row, far right), is leading this effort, which began in summer 2012 with a successful exchange between NYIT and Hallym University.

From July 16 to Aug. 15, NYIT hosted 11 South Korean students and their dean, Dr. Byung Don Choe of Hallym University, for a four-week study abroad program. Koenig worked with Julie Fratrick, director of the NYIT Center for Global Academic Exchange, to organize an array of educational, professional, and cultural immersion experiences for the visiting group.

Koenig coordinated six private tours at top luxury hotels in Manhattan, including the Mandarin Oriental, Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, and Waldorf=Astoria and convened experts from the hospitality industry to serve as guest speakers in the classroom. They included Rick Amato, vice president for the New York Hotel Association; Andrew Rigie, executive director for the New York City Hospitality Alliance; and Rocco LaForgia, director of worldwide sales accounts for Hilton Worldwide and president of the New York Chapter for the Professional Convention Management Association.

Students from Hallym University experienced New York's historical and cultural history by attending tours of Lincoln Center, the United Nations, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and International Gold Vault, Empire State Building, Blue Note Jazz Café, and Brotherhood Winery, America's oldest winery. They also completed two NYIT courses: business communications for hospitality students and professional hospitality leadership management.

16th International Workshop

Teams from ten nations are coming together April 6-19, 2013 for an international meeting in the USA. While playing a business management game, you will be discovering national, cultural and educational peculiarities in behavior and work style. As a member of a multinational team you will try to find solutions with the aim of outperforming your competitors in the market. The best three companies will present their results publicly at New York Institute of Technology (NYIT).

Additionally, we will do volleyball tournaments, organized by functions within the company.

 

Where are we going?

We are meeting in Washington D.C., USA, on April 6, 2013.

After exploring the city for two days with Capitol Hill, White House and Washington Monument we are travelling, with a stopover in Baltimore, to the shore of New Jersey, where we will arrive at our workshop venue, a hotel located at one of the most wonderful beaches at the east coast of USA, south of New York City. We are staying there for one week with the competition in the management game (your daily routine), interrupted by a day trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the »Gambling Centre« of Atlantic City. The big final will take place in the form of a general meeting of shareholders, which will be held at the NYIT at Old Westbury Campus, Long Island. The program ends with a three-day trip to the buzzling heart of New York City: Manhattan! In New Jersey as well as in New York we will have the opportunity of visiting interesting companies, as well as the United Nations' (UN) and the Federal Reserve Bank's headquarters. On April 19 you will have to say »bye bye« to your new friends.

 

Who is eligible?

Six business and economics students specializing in marketing and sales, procurement, production planning, human resources management or financing.
