President Guiliano delivered his 13th address at NYIT's annual convocation on Aug. 30. He announced a new Presidential Endowed Professorship funded with a $1 million gift and discussed NYIT's role as "an idea incubator … where academia, commerce, innovation, and culture mingle, and cross-fertilize to engage meaningfully in research, development, and other activities that contribute to the understanding and betterment of the world."
This year, five faculty and staff members received Presidential Technology Awards. Pictured with President Guiliano (far left) and NYIT Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Rahmat Shoureshi (far right) are (from left): Yong Ra, senior engineer, Technology Based Learning Systems; Jason Van Nest, assistant professor of architecture; Veronica Southard, D.H.Sc., associate professor of physical therapy; and Karen Friel, D.H.Sc., associate professor and chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. Not pictured is awardee Vinh Pham, adjunct assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies.
Awardees were honored in four categories:
- Karen Friel and Veronica Southard, winners for technology in the teaching and learning process for full-time faculty
- Vinh Pham, winner for technology in the teaching and learning process for part-time faculty
- Jason Van Nest, winner for the use of technology in research and/or creative expression
- Yong Ra, winner for the use of technology in the service of students
