NYIT Celebrates Annual Convocation

President Guiliano delivered his 13th address at NYIT's annual convocation on Aug. 30. He announced a new Presidential Endowed Professorship funded with a $1 million gift and discussed NYIT's role as "an idea incubator … where academia, commerce, innovation, and culture mingle, and cross-fertilize to engage meaningfully in research, development, and other activities that contribute to the understanding and betterment of the world."

NYIT Convocation

This year, five faculty and staff members received Presidential Technology Awards. Pictured with President Guiliano (far left) and NYIT Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Rahmat Shoureshi (far right) are (from left): Yong Ra, senior engineer, Technology Based Learning Systems; Jason Van Nest, assistant professor of architecture; Veronica Southard, D.H.Sc., associate professor of physical therapy; and Karen Friel, D.H.Sc., associate professor and chair of the Department of Physical Therapy. Not pictured is awardee Vinh Pham, adjunct assistant professor of interdisciplinary studies.

Awardees were honored in four categories:

  • Karen Friel and Veronica Southard, winners for technology in the teaching and learning process for full-time faculty
  • Vinh Pham, winner for technology in the teaching and learning process for part-time faculty
  • Jason Van Nest, winner for the use of technology in research and/or creative expression
  • Yong Ra, winner for the use of technology in the service of students

Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., Named to Institute of Medicine Committee

Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., Named to Institute of Medicine Committee Barbara Ross-Lee, D.O., vice president for health sciences and medical affairs, has been appointed to serve on the national committee of the nonprofit Institute of Medicine (IOM), the health branch of the National Academy of Sciences. The new IOM committee comprised of medical professionals and scholars is charged with assessing the governance and financing of graduate medical education in the United States and recommending reforms to better prepare future doctors to meet 21st-century health care challenges. ...more

Meet Monique Taylor, Ph.D.

A few months ago Monique Taylor, Ph.D., began taking Mandarin classes in Mexico City with her husband and nine-year-old daughter. She had just returned from three trips to Nanjing bearing gifts of tea, silk, coins, and maps to offer glimpses of the life her family would begin when she assumed her role as NYIT-Nanjing’s campus dean and executive director.

Federal regulations require NYIT to provide specific plan and investment information related to the TIAA-CREF retirement programs on an annual basis, including details about your investment options and expenses associated with those investments. The following documents are available on the NYIT portal, Human Resources section, under "Benefits":

  • Summary of Plan Services and Costs (plan-related disclosure): provides information about administrative fees, individual transaction expenses, and an employee's right to direct investments.
  • Investment Options Comparative Chart (investment-related disclosure): provides information about the investment options available to an employee with appropriate performance and expense details included.

Save the Date: NYIT Cyber Security Conference NYIT will host its third Cyber Security Conference on Thursday, Sept. 20, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway in Manhattan. The event will feature a keynote address by Neal Ziring on "Defending Cyberspace: Are We Ready to Meet Emerging Cyber Threats?" Ziring is the technical director of the Information Assurance Directorate at the National Security Agency. He will be joined by experts in the field, including NYIT assistant professors of computer science Kiran Balagani and Wei Ding; Rajesh Goel (B.S. '94), chief technical officer and co-founder of Brainlink; and others. ...more
