NYIT Energy Conference 2014 Focuses on Transportation

Old Westbury, N.Y.  (June 13, 2014) – A student-led drone demonstration and in-depth presentations about drone applications took center stage at New York Institute of Technology’s annual energy conference yesterday.

Energy in Motion: Energy by Road, Rail, and Drone featured expert panelists on alternative energy, regional transportation challenges and solutions, and future technologies that will safely and quickly transport people and products. Conference attendees also enjoyed test drives around campus in three Tesla Model S cars, high-end electric cars with zero emissions.
 
Drones: Evolution and Applications
 
Students from the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers showcased The Osprey, a six-rotor drone they built for a national contest held by the organization. With its motors buzzing and propellers whirling, The Osprey lifted off from a patio at NYIT de Seversky Mansion, hovered momentarily, and then successfully delivered a small weight to a nearby platform before gliding through a makeshift goalpost. Student Nick Engel controlled the drone with a remote as his classmates watched and conference attendees recorded the demonstration on smartphones.
 
Assistant Professor James Scire, Jr., Ph.D., said the presentation “was an excellent showcase of the students’ talent and demonstrated the importance of club activities for student development.”
 
Scire noted that the demonstration reinforced the points that drone experts made during the conference panel on drone technology. Mary “Missy” Cummings, Ph.D., of Duke University, noted that drones are emerging as a major industry with applications ranging from artistic expression and commerce to inspections, firefighting, and resource surveillance. In England and India, companies have experimented with using drones to deliver pizzas, while in the United States, Amazon raised eyebrows in some quarters with its announcement last year that it would begin a drone-by-delivery service.
 
Drones save energy and reduce pollution, Cummings said, and that as the infrastructure of drone systems grows, the industry will the source of new jobs for those trained as drone engineers, ground controllers, and network supervisors. Engineers and other professionals are also working on security and safety issues as the industry expands. 
 
“You have got to get serious about expanding your robotics program,” Cummings advised. In your local schools, primary, secondary, and college levels. You’ve got to get more of your people in these programs…it’s a real technology investment that all states need to make.”
 
Cummings presentation was followed by two TEDx videos by Andreas Raptopoulos and Paola Santana, co-founders of Matternet, a Silicon Valley start-up that is launching a new transportation system of drone networks to deliver small packages in remote areas.
 
Long Island’s Transportation Challenges
 
The conference opened with a sobering assessment of Long Island’s future based on a recent survey of 413 millennials who overwhelmingly agreed that they would leave Long Island because of high housing costs and an inability to find jobs aligned with their salary expectations and skills. Martin R. Cantor, Ph.D., director of the Long Island Center for Socio-Economic Policy, said Long Island’s economic problems are tied to energy and transportation challenges that affect the labor force.
 
Transportation experts from the Long Island Rail Road and Nassau County spoke of new improvements to the rails and roads, including an $8 billion LIRR project to provide access to Manhattan’s East Side and plans to investigate a fixed rail system that reduce traffic and emissions in central Nassau County. 
 
Alternative Innovations
 
The final panel explored innovations in alternative fuels and technology, including natural gas fueling stations, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and green vehicles.
 
Ken Daly, president, National Grid New York, said natural gas offers significant economic and environmental benefits for Long Island. The industry is growing, with
 
“Each year, we’re advancing the technology,” Daly said, noting that he expects to see natural gas vehicles represent five to ten percent of all vehicles in the future as gas networks are modernized and expanded.
 
Jessica Harrison of DNV GL, said the nation’s electric vehicle charging network is growing from individual stations to a sophisticated system that will help support the electric grid. Wireless charging prototypes also have been developed and pilot programs are underway in New York City.
 
The conference’s final speaker, Joseph Ambrosio, (BS, ’94), chief technical officer of Unique Technical Services, LLC, said the majority of imported fuel is used in transportation, which makes the development of more “green vehicles” important as a factor in reducing energy costs.

Dean Nada Anid Profiled Among Women Engineering Deans from Across the U.S.

Dr. Nada Anid, Dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences at NYIT, has recently been featured in an article on CareerGlider.com highlighting the work of female Engineering Deans from across the United States.

SWE Members Celebrate One Year of STEM Outreach with Science Fair at NYIT

On May 12, 2014, Society of Women Engineers (SWE) members Michelle Messenger and Adriana Maldonado celebrated a year’s worth of hard work and dedication to promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to local youth by hosting a science fair at NYIT’s Manhattan campus. The fair featured 16 young scientists from the Renaissance School of the Arts in Harlem who were eager to present their work and explain their experiments to NYIT student, staff, and faculty judges. As part of NYIT SWE’s ongoing partnership with Citizen Schools, Messenger and Maldonado have spent one day a week at Renaissance School teaching 6th grade students all about STEM—from LEGO Robotics to lemon batteries—you name it, they covered it. Their work with Citizen Schools serves to extend the children’s school day, all while enriching their education with hands-on knowledge about STEM topics.

 The apprentices at the May 12 science fair showcased their ability to create basic electricity generators using common household objects such as cardboard boxes, magnets, and metal wire. Their generators were able to light up LEDs without the aid of any batteries or other sources of power. The 6th graders, who expressed excitement about being able to create such gadgets on their own, impressed NYIT engineering students with their ability to describe the fundamental principles of electricity that they learned under Maldonado and Messenger’s fun and informative classroom leadership.

In addition to teaching the students about the basics of electricity and engineering, Maldonado and Messenger covered a variety of STEM topics to get their apprentices excited about science. During the fall semester, they lead workshops for the students on LEGO Robotics and carbon footprint reduction, and encouraged the kids to think critically about how technology and scientific knowledge can make positive impacts on society. It was a fulfilling experience for both women. Said Messinger, “It was really cool to see the kids learning and absorbing the information. I would definitely do this program again.”

Citizen Schools is a not-for-profit organization that partners with middle schools across the U.S. to expand the learning day for children in low-income or underperforming school districts.

ASME Students Build Drone, Participate in Student Professional Development Conference

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) held its annual Student Professional Development Conference April 25-27 this year at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Several members of NYIT’s chapter of the organization were in attendance at the 3-day conference to showcase their research and compete against fellow students in the northeast, and network in an engineering career fair.

ASME members Derek Stack, Archie Yepes, Colin Vinson, and Nick Engel all sought to participate in this year’s Student Design Competition, which challenged young engineers to design a remote-controlled, heavy-lifting hovering aircraft that can pass through gates and drop a payload on a target. The competition was designed to simulate water-bucket drops on a forest fire. Unfortunately, due to two late equipment failures, NYIT’s ASME team was unable to compete at regionals, but thanks to their perseverance and hard work, their multi-rotor machine is already stronger and better than ever before, and ready to compete at the international exposition in the fall. The ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress Exposition is slated to take place November 11-20, 2014 in Montreal, Quebec.

NYIT’s student section of ASME has been developing their custom built, heavy-lift multi-rotor drone (pictured above) for several months now, and look forward to testing it on the playing field in November. They have built this machine thanks to the practice and research experience they were able to complete by working with three quadcopters that were donated to NYIT earlier this year.  The funds used to purchase the drones were given by SoECS alumnus Robert A Russo, who graduated from NYIT in 1969 with his B.S. in Aeronautical Technology.

SAE Car Show Draws More than 50 Unique Vehicles to Benefit U.S. Veterans

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) of NYIT held their second annual Car Show to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project on April 27, 2014. This year’s show was organized by SAE student leadership, and drew more than 50 rare, exotic, and unique cars to the parking lots of NYIT’s Old Westbury campus. This year’s event built on the success of last year’s inaugural car show, drawing a large crowd for some fun in the sun, delicious barbecued food, and a glimpse at a number of glamorous vehicles, all to benefit a charity organization dedicated to helping the men and women of the United States military who have been wounded in combat.

The show included a variety of American muscle cars and student-owned vehicles. In attendance were several automotive clubs from the greater Long Island area, such as the New York Mustangs, Truck Mafia International, LI Rigs, and many more. Notably, Ludmilla Amani, Associate Professor of Telecommunications and Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology at NYIT, along with her organization, the Driving Force Club, presented more than 25 exotic vehicles at the show, including member-owned McLarens, Lamborginis, Ferraris, Aventadors, GTI’s, and many more.

Also in attendance were several representatives from the United States military to show their support for NYIT and the Wounded Warrior Project. Staff Sergeant Ryan Bhoorasingh and his men of the New York Army National Guard, who brought with them two impressive armored vehicles to exhibit at the show.

Along with raising awareness for the daily challenges that our wounded veterans face on a day to day basis, the car show also shed light on the efforts and progress that locally-based companies are making toward creating a greener Long Island. EmPower Solar and The Greater Long Island Clean Cities Coalition attended the show and gave informative presentations to attendees on the benefits of alternative fuels, green engineering, and the future of the automotive industry.

The event was a great success, and many of those involved expressed a hope that the SAE car show will continue as an annual NYIT tradition. SAE President, Anthony Reyes, emphasized the do-it-yourself, grassroots spirit of the event, saying “the car show is a shining reminder of all the good that NYIT students can do all on their own, and the leaders that they will be in the future.” The success of this year's car show serves as an excellent example of the ways in which NYIT and its surrounding community can come together to affect positive change--and have a good time. 

This "Best in Show" trophy was designed and created by SAE member and Mechanical Engineering research student James Kelleher using a laser-cutter in NYIT's lab facilities.

NYIT Students Compete in the 2014 VEX Robotics Championship, Place 11th Worldwide

Congratulations are in order for NYITs IEEE robotics team, who recently travelled to Anaheim, California for the 2014 VEX Robotics World Championship, and placed 11th out of 62 college teams worldwide. NYIT also placed 6th out of the 22 teams who competed in the Skills Challenges portion of the competition. The championship was held April 24 27, and brought more than 15,000 participants from 23 countries to the Anaheim Convention Center to compete at the elementary, high school, and college levels.  This years team from NYIT consisted of 9 students from across disciplines, who collaborated to build this years impressive and well-performing robot. Team members were Richard Mortimore, Matthew Wighton, Jesus Moo, Marissa Viggiano, Chinam Tomeda, Vito Cataccio, Kayla Ho, Nick Passaro, and Nurbolat Tulgenov. Saverio Marsicano, Senior Technician for the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences at Old Westbury, serves as the team's coach.
 

The teams of programmers, engineers and strategists that compete in the VEX Robotics Competition must design and pilot a robot to outperform those of other teams on the playing field. In addition to technical skills and expertise in the games, the teams must exhibit an ability to communicate, collaborate, and work together under stressful conditions.

 

The central challenge of the games takes place on a 12’ by 12’ square field, which is populated by two different sizes of balls that can be thrown by the competing robots into opposing goal zones. The goal of each team that participates in the challenge is simple: to score more points than their competitor. In order to surmount the courses obstacles and defeat their opponent, the robots and their pilots must demonstrate dexterity, accuracy, speed, and power. NYIT’s robot was an especially exciting machine to watch, as it crushed all of its opponents in the opening rounds, even soaring to 1st place by the end of the 2nd day. The NYIT team finished with an exceptional 8-2 win ratio.
 

The competition was about more than winning to NYITs team of engineers and strategists, who bonded over the experience and forged lasting friendships in preparation for the competition. Team member Kayla Ho said of her experience, I always loved the idea of working with robots because they are the bridge between creativity and reality, and this team helped make that dream come true. Like all teams, we have had our ups and downs, but with teamwork, tenacity, and fun times all around, we rose above our challenges. This sense of pride, comradeship, and sportsmanship was shared by many team members. Chinam Tomeda, who will graduate NYIT this May, was especially glad to be on the IEEE robotics team. He said I am glad I was able to close out my NYIT education with this experienceit will stand out as one of my favorite memories of my college life.

NYIT Hosts Third Engineering and Technology Showcase Competition for High School Students

Old Westbury, N.Y. (April 30, 2014) –Now in its third year, New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) attracted more student teams to its annual competition for high school students to showcase and exhibit their ongoing projects based on science and/or engineering principles than in the competition’s first two years combined. Yesterday, 20 co-ed or all-female teams vied in this competition, hailing from Brentwood High School, Commack High School, John F. Kennedy High School Plainview-Old Bethpage, and Manhasset High School.  

The competition is offered through a partnership between NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences and ConnectToTech, a volunteer organization whose mission is to inspire and support students to connect to technology educational and career opportunities through community, academic, and other partnerships. 

Students competed for awards and certificates; the top team, from Commack High School, consisting of students Anthony Bisculo and Kayla Housmand, won for its project, Low-Cost System to Detect the Occurrence of Solar Flares. A team from Commack High School has placed first in each of the three years that this competition has been held. A team comprised of Nicolette Almer and Kirina Ziadkhanpour from John F. Kennedy High School Plainview-Old Bethpage was awarded second place, as well as the distinction of Excellence in Research for its project, The Effect of TiO2 Nanoparticle Exposure on Adipose Derived Stem Cells. Third place, for the project, The Evaluation of Novel Conductive Gels for Studies on Biological Redox Reactions, also was awarded to John F. Kennedy High School Plainview-Old Bethpage, and its team member Reva Butensky.   

“We are thrilled with the growth of this program and relish the opportunity to provide bright, ambitious high school students with a forum to showcase their ongoing science, technology, and engineering projects, while at the same time helping to build the pipeline for a new generation of researchers and professionals in the STEM fields,” said Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D., Dean of NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. 
 
The competition is open to high school students to showcase their ongoing science and technology projects. Teams must demonstrate understanding of the underlying science and technology concepts for their projects, which are evaluated based on originality, potential for practical application(s), and the significance of the problem they seek to address. Each team must include at least one female student.

“Our students reap many benefits from participating in competitions like this, but being an active part of the science community on Long Island is by far the most valuable,” said Gary Repetto, department head; Science, Brentwood High School, which entered 9 teams in the showcase.

Judith Murrah, ConnectToTech president said, “I want to thank NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences for its partnership with the ConnectToTech program. I am so happy that together, we can influence so many students and teachers.”

Manhasset High School entered five teams in the competition; Commack entered four, and John F. Kennedy High School Plainview-Old Bethpage entered two teams.

"Plainview-Old Bethpage has participated in ConnectToTech since its inception. Each year we return because the day provides our students with such a positive experience as they share their work with truly interested judges and faculty.  The cooperative exchange of ideas and opportunity to view the work of other young women is especially rewarding," noted Mary Lou O'Donnell, Research Coordinator at John F. Kennedy High School Plainview-Old Bethpage.

New York Community Bank Foundation and ConnectToTech were sponsors of the high school showcase. Judges in the competition included: Dr. Marian Conway, Executive Director and Cindy Krezel, Program Officer, New York Community Bank Foundation; ConnectToTech representatives were Judith Murrah, Rhonda Green, and Jesse Hayward. NYIT faculty judges included Fang Li, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Electrical and Chemical Engineering; James Scire, Ph.D.,  Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering; and Saviero Marsicano, Senior Technician, Telecomm and Electrical Engineering Technology. Student judges were Will Udoh, president, National Society of Black Engineers, NYIT-Old Westbury; Michelle Messenger, president, Society of Women Engineers, NYIT-Old Westbury, and Pranav Srinivas Krishnamurthy.

SoECS to Debut Computer Science Courses in Big Data Analytics

As the internet continues its spread into every aspect of the average American’s day to day life, the amount of data generated by web users has ballooned into what Computer Scientists call “big data.” Big data is a mainly unstructured and untapped array of information that consists of videos, photos, emails, tweets, likes, clicks, and more. While current technology enables us to reliably and cheaply store such data, the sheer volume of it makes it difficult to analyze and extract relevant social and business information from it. This has led to an ever-increasing demand for workers skilled in “big data analytics,” the new and continually evolving set of tools and techniques for discovering and decoding the relevant pieces of big data. Big data can be used to make vital decisions in fields as diverse as science, politics, health, crime, security, and energy use.

The research arm of the American global management consulting firm, McKinsey and Company, Inc., projects that by 2020, the U.S. will need between 140,000 and 190,000 additional workers with deep analytic skills, and up to 1.5 million more data-literate managers. To meet this demand, NYIT will begin offering a course, “Big Data Analytics,” along with a Computer Science program concentration in “Big Data Management and Analytics.” The new CS concentration is a revision of the currently offered concentration in “Information Management,” and is designed to equip Computer Science students with both the technical knowledge and analytic acumen necessary to extract meaning from big data.

Because all computer science-related fields are being transformed by data-driven discovery and decision-making, NYIT’s computer science faculty has identified the necessity of preparing our students with deep analytic skills. The job market for college graduates with these skills is growing rapidly, increasing at more than 30 percent a year, and is likely to become a $24 billion industry by 2016, as forecasted by the research firm IDC.

Several major technology companies and a host of start-ups are aggressively pursuing the big data business. IBM, a leader in big data management and analytics and NYIT partner, has agreed to assist the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences in the implementation of the new Big Data Analytics concentration and courses. With their “System z Academic Initiative,” IBM will enable NYIT to use and teach IBM enterprise systems and connect IBM clients with NYIT to hire students who are learning these critical system skills.

Thanks to this new level of partnership with IBM and the innovative addition of Big Data Analytics to the B.S. in Computer Science program at NYIT, graduates will be endowed with the inquisitive, analytical, and detail-oriented skills necessary to succeed in the ever-evolving technology market.

Dean Nada Anid Serves as Co-Chair for Engineering at LI STEM Hub Celebration

On April 9, 2014, Dr. Nada Anid, Dean of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, attended the second annual Stars of STEM event, a celebration in honor of the Long Island Regional STEM Hub. The Stars of STEM event, which was held at The Cradle of Aviation in Garden City, consisted of a Long Island STEM Student Showcase, an exhibit of Long Island businesses, and distinguished guest speakers such as Al Bunshaft, President and CEO of Dassault Systems. The LI STEM Hub seeks to bring together various sectors of the educational and industrial sectors of the Long Island community through eight focus groups: energy and environment, engineering and architecture, manufacturing, aerospace, information technology, healthcare and life sciences, homeland security, and global business.

This past year, Dr. Anid served as Co-Chair for the Engineering and Architecture Regional Industry Council (RIC) alongside John Cameron, CEO of Cameron Engineering. In this leadership role Dr. Anid was a part of the team that decided on which STEM Hub activities will take place, in particular the “Reconstruction and Resilience ” theme of this year's high school's challenge for rebuilding and reinforcing Long Island's infrastructure post-Sandy.

LI STEM Hub is a network of businesses and academic institutions that are dedicated to advancing the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in order to create a more vibrant and dynamic economy in Long Island. The LI STEM Hub is one of 10 such initiatives throughout New York State, created as part of the Empire State STEM Learning Network. The organization, which is led by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory and the North-Shore LIJ Health System, connects  businesses, public schools, universities, museums, research institutions, parents, and teachers based in Long Island in order to forge STEM education programs and partnerships that expand and improve college and career opportunities for students.

Owl Computing Technologies Contributes to NYIT Learning Resources

April 16, 2014 - Owl Computing Technologies, Inc., a network security and information solutions provider, has recently announced that it will collaborate with NYIT to contribute equipment that will enhance learning in the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences' programs. The donated equipment will update SoECS classrooms by providing students the opportunity to receive hands-on experience with equipment that is prevalent within the industry. This hands-on experience will help students to understand aspects of network security that are otherwise difficult to conceptualize without practical application. 

The donated equipment will also facilitiate research that is underway at NYIT. The new equipment has a ranging utility, which includes electronic communication for surgically implanted devices, assisted living technologies, mobile device security, and healthcare information security. 

"The School of Engineering and Computing Sciences at New York Institute of Technology is thrilled about its partnership with Owl Computing Technologies," says Dr. Nada Anid, Dean of SoECS. "We consider the donation a first step into infusing our curricula, research, and classroom projects with advanced, industry-grade technology."

As part of a series of equipment donations, Owl provided NYIT the following resources: Small Form Factor products, including the world's smallest CDS 002DS, Owl Perimeter Defense Solution, in Single Purpose and Multi-Purpose configurations; and Oracle 5120 Servers to support the University infrastructure.

SWE Members Attend Regional Conference, Volunteer at FIRST Robotics

The Old Westbury chapter of Society of Engineers is keeping busy in the Long Island community.

Among their recent activities is their attendance of the SWE Regional E Conference in Blacksburg, VA at Virginia Tech from March 28-30. At the conference, SWE members networked with other chapters of the national organization, attended collegiate and professional development workshops, and met with industry professionals from across the mid-Atlantic region. A major component of the Region E conference was a career fair, which afforded NYIT SWE members the opportunity to meet with recruiters from prestigious companies and organizations such as NASA, PSEG, CISCO, and Boeing. In addition to these activities, attendees sat in on a professional meeting which featured distinguished speakers such as Terry McAuliffe, the Governor of Virginia. SWE members are looking forward to the SWE National Conference in Los Angeles, CA in October. 

Recent SWE activities don't stop there! Old Westbury members Rita Sobhy and Michelle Messenger volunteered with the professional chapter SWE-NY at the 2014 FIRST Robotics competition on April 6. This global competition, held at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City featured 200 robotics teams from the tri-state area, Brazil, Canada, Turkey, and the UK. The teams of high school students competed for 3 days for the chance to move forward to the global competition. Alongside members of SWE-NY, Sobhy and Messenger helped children at the event to build wheel baloon cars, among other hands-on experiments. Of the event, Messenger says, "We had fun watching the robotics competition, and the event was inspiring to all who attended."

SoECS Faculty Explore Research Collaborations at Bioelectronics Conference

On Wednesday, March 19, 2014, Dean Nada Anid, Ph.D., of NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences (SoECS), Dr. Marta Panero, SoECS Director of Strategic Partnerships, and a group of SoECS faculty members including Drs. Aydin Farajidavar, Wei Ding, Ziqian Dong, Huanying Gu, and Tao Zhang, attended the “Centricity Series” conference on Bioelectronic Medicine at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research (a North Shore Long Island Jewish Health Systems affiliate).

The emerging and cross-disciplinary field of bioelectronic medicine is a promising research thrust for collaboration between NYIT’s Engineering and Computer Science faculty and researchers at the Feinstein Institute. Hailed as the next generation of medical treatment, bioelectronics is the synergy between biology and technology, using electronics to harness the power of nerve signals to treat a spectrum of inflammatory conditions and other health ailments. The Centricity Series on Bioelectronic Medicine included panels on a variety of medical conditions, and highlighted many avenues for exploring the use of bioelectronics in both diagnosis and treatment. Among the panels were “Bioelectronics and Intestinal Motility,” “Robotics and Neuro-Recovery,” “Integrated Biosensors,” and “Monitoring the Injured Brain.”

The series allowed SoECS faculty members who are engaged in research in electrical and biomedical engineering and medical devices development to explore collaborations with researchers at FIMR,  including Dr. Aydin Farajidavar (ECE), who specializes in biomedical instrumentation (wearable and implantable medical devices for wireless acquisition of gastric electrical activity), and biological signal processing, and Dr. Helen Gu (CS) who is working on medical informatics with an emphasis on controlled medical terminologies.

Several other promising synergies between NYIT and FIMR research were discussed at the conference. For example, Dr. Tao Zhang (ECE) discussed potential collaborations with researchers at Cushing Neuroscience Laboratory on developing medical technologies such as wireless catheters or microfluidic devices. Dr. Wei Ding (CS) discussed the possibility of working with researchers at FIMR on the development of wireless surgical devices. Dr. Chung Hyuk Park (ECE) also found that rehabilitation via a robotic system at FIMR can be aligned with his haptic and assistive robotics through expanded research methodologies. Dr. Ziqian Dong (ECE) suggested collaborating on assistive devices and efficient signal processing techniques for real-time data collection and analysis to understand and assist in the rehabilitation of Parkinson’s Disease patients. 

The Feinstein Institute is a state-of-the-art medical research and training facility in Manhasset, New York, with pioneering discoveries and cutting-edge clinical research on the areas of immunology, inflammation, neuroscience, behavioral medicine, and Alzheimer’s disease. The Institute’s Centricity lecture series is a good platform for sharing of knowledge, expertise, and innovative ideas among clinicians and the larger research community, by presenting novel biomedical research and clinical observations and enabling key collaborations between medical practitioners and other scientists.

The presence of SoECS faculty at this exciting and pioneering conference is a first step towards a research partnership between NYIT’s SoECS and the Feinstein Institute.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon Honors Society Inducts New Members

In recognition of student outstanding academic record, the New York Institute of Technology chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE) induction ceremony was held on Tuesday, April 08, 2014 at the de Seversky Mansion at New York Institute of Technology’s Old Westbury campus.

UPE is an international honor society for students in the Computer and Information Sciences; it is recognized by both the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Computer Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE-CS), the two major international professional societies for Computer Science and Engineering.

The mission of UPE is to recognize academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Computing and Information Disciplines. UPE is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS).

NSBE-Manhattan Make Connections at Annual National Convention

The 2014 National National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Conference took place March 27-28 in Nashville Tennessee, and the NYIT Manhattan chapter of the organization was there in full force to network with industry prodessionals, present their hard work, and learn from NSBE members and affiliates. While in attendance, NSBE members saw cutting-edge exos, attended development workshops, competed in engineering challenges, and participated in a two-day career and graduate school fair with recruiters from over 300 companies and universites, including MIT, NASA, Ford, Boeing, Cisco, Google, Microsoft, and Goldman Sachs. 

The highlight of the event for NYIT students was the election of Omari Adams, President of the Manhattan chapter, to the position of Metro - Long Island Zone Chairperson, a position that oversees over 12 different NSBE chapters in New York. In addition to Omari's promotion, NSBE at NYIT has also been elected to host the next NSBE Metro-LI Zone Conference in the fall, which will convene Engineers and STEM students from schools around the New York metropolitan area for workshops, lectures and a career fair at the Manhattan campus.

Dean Nada Anid Speaks at U.S. Department of State Panel on the Water-Energy Nexus

On March 18, 2014, senior government and industry officials convened for  an annual assessment of their joint work under the U.S.-China Ten-Year Framework (TYF) for Cooperation on Energy and Environment. The TYF’s supports a number of environmental initiatives such as the U.S.-China EcoPartnership Program, including New York Institute of Technology and Peking University’s (PKU) “EcoPartnership on Groundwater Monitoring, Protection, and Training.

The meeting at the US Department of State in Washington, D.C., included a discussion on the emerging theme of the water-energy nexus and climate change in cities. Dean Nada Anid, Ph.D., of the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences was invited to give introductory remarks before the panel session on the Water-Energy Nexus, which featured the Honorable Li Haiyan, Counsel of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) of the People’s Republic of China, and Dr. Vincent Tidwell of Sandia National Laboratories. The panel discussion was framed around several critical questions, including how cities can optimize their energy matrix infrastructure to meet projected future energy and water requirements; how existing power grids influence the cost of using both energy and water; and how urban areas may improve access to clean water and efficient energy for all residents; also touching on the opportunities for synergistic links between water and energy systems, such as using waste heat for water treatment.

Dean Anid’s introductory remarks called for a new paradigm that must drive infrastructure projects in order to promote water and energy efficiency, sustainability, and smart growth. She spoke about the significance of the water and energy nexus by presenting the work of the EcoPartnership on Groundwater Monitoring, Protection and Training led by NYIT and PKU in partnership with Wuhan University, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the International Society for Water Solutions (ISWS), and HDR, a global engineering and architecture firm. Dr. Anid also announced the upcoming conference in Beijing, China on April 17, that NYIT and PKU are hosting “The Water-Energy Nexus: Sustainability and Global Challenges, and noted that all 6 EcoPartners will be participating. The conference is being organized in conjunction with the workshop, “Clean Water Matters: Challenges and Research Perspectives,” on April 18, co-funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, and seeks to create a common platform for research collaborations and joint projects. Both events will convene representatives from government agencies, industry, NGO’s, and academia who are working toward advancing the research agenda to find solutions to the impending global water and energy crises. The EcoPartnership seeks to promote Clean Water, through innovative models and technologies for the effective detection, protection, and monitoring of groundwater in China and the United States. These range from an integrated, web-based tool being developed by NYIT at its Green Technologies Laboratory (as part of the Entrepreneurship and Technology Innovation Center); to a remote telemetry framework to collect and analyze groundwater data from wells that will be introduced by Wuhan University and HDR/HydroQual; as well as a groundwater transport simulation system developed at PKU’s Center for Water Research, and related training by AIChE. Participants in the TYF conference from both China and the United States responded positively to Dean Anid’s presentation, and showed a high level of interest in learning more about these technologies and future progress on achieving the goals of the EcoPartnership.

SoECS-Organized Global Cyber Security Conference in Abu Dhabi Draws Experts from Around the World

NYIT held its first Global Cybersecurity Conference in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates on March 25, 2014.  The day-long conference, organized by the School of Engineering and Computing Sciences, was inaugurated by His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan (pictured above, center), U.A.E. Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development. HE Sheikh Nahayan praised the interconnectivity made possible by the internet and insisted that we should all be concerned in protecting it.

NYIT’s conference welcomed cyber defense professionals, information technologists, academicians, banking and finance executives, and others across these fields from the U.S., China, the United Arab Emirates and the greater Middle East/North Africa region.

It has been estimated that cybercrime costs more than $113 billion annually, with 378 million victims—more than the entire population of the Middle East. In addition, the U.A.E. recently disclosed plans to nearly double its security budget in the coming decade, with most of the increase to be used for cyber security.

The conference was held under the theme of National and Corporate Threats, Protection, and Education. Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., NYIT’s president since 2000 (pictured above, right), delivered opening remarks, asserting that higher education is “a core component in heightening cybersecurity.”

More than 200 attendees, including faculty and students from NYIT, the Higher Colleges of Technology (HCT) and other universities across the country, gathered insights from experts including highly reputed keynote speakers, as well as President Guiliano and other members of NYIT administration such as Nada Marie Anid, Ph.D. (above, left), dean of NYIT’s SoECS. Information technology experts from the UAE, the U.S., England, Sweden, and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications in Nanjing China, a partner of NYIT, participated in the meetings.

The majority of speakers, panelists, and moderators at the conference are representatives of important technology companies, many of which have a history of collaboration and partnership with NYIT’s School of Engineering and Computing Sciences. For example, the afternoon keynote speaker, Parag Pruthi, Ph.D., founder, chairman, and CEO, NIKSUN Inc., a forensics-based cybersecurity solutions company, gave a compelling lecture on “the dawn of a new era” in which rogue governments seek political control over other countries by launching sophisticated cyber attacks.

Keynote speaker Daniel R. Ennis, who runs the U.S. National Security Agency/Central Security Service’s Threat Operations Center, advocated cooperation among governments, academia, and industry, in spite of challenges such as privacy issues, business competition, and governments’ traditional secrecy. He pushed for “a fundamental maturing of the public, private, and academic partnership” in order to provide cybersecurity, a mission Ennis compared to counterterrorism.

Other valuable insights came from a diverse array of cybersecurity professionals, many of whom are executives at companies that are represented on the Dean’s Executive Advisory Board, or board members themselves. Representatives include Ron Mraz, President of OWL Computing Technologies; Edward J. Chance, the Director of UK, France and Emerging Markets for Dell SecureWorks; Luke Forsyth, VP of Security Services for CA Technologies; Henrik Davidsson, the Director of Security Sales at Juniper Networks; Nadhem Al-Fardan, a Systems Analyst for Cisco; and Ragy Madgdy, IBM’s Middle East Regional Sales Leader for IBM Security Systems.

Throughout the day, conference delegates also benefited from panel discussions about protecting financial assets and, perhaps even more important, training young cyber professionals. SoECS offers several options for students interested in pursuing a career in cybersecurity. For example, undergraduate Computer Science majors have the option of adding a concentration in Network Security or Big Data Management and Analytics, and the Information Technology major also offers concentrations in Information and Network Security. NYIT also is pioneering the field of cybersecurity at the graduate level by offering a M.S. degree in Information, Network, and Computer Security.

Tayeb Kamali, Ph.D., vice chancellor of the Higher Colleges of Technology, said the cybersecurity conference will help to prepare U.A.E. nationals for careers in the vital and growing field of security and other security-related sectors. “The many students who attended the conference will gain valuable insights into cybersecurity from industry experts around the world.  This will result in empowering Emirati students with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to contribute effectively to our nation and to reach their full potential,” he said.

NYIT’s Abu Dhabi campus was established in 2005 as the first licensed and accredited American university in the U.A.E. capital. Nearly 600 NYIT graduates, some of whom also attended today’s conference, now play their part in the U.A.E.’s growing economy, working in private and public organizations across the country.
