NSBE Members Attend Regional Conference, Win "Rising Star Award"
Members of NYIT’s NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) chapter recently attended the NSBE Fall Regional Conference. FRCs provide a forum for discussion and information exchange between collegiate, pre-college, alumni, and corporate representatives at the regional level. Within the three-day weekend, each region encourages academic excellence and professional development through various technical and cultural workshops, competitions, and career and graduate school fairs. FRC is NSBE’s largest regional gathering, with NSBE chapters from Cooper Union, NYU-Poly, City College of New York, and Columbia University in attendance.
NYIT's Manhattan chapter of NSBE had the honor of receiving the organization's "Rising Star" Award at the event, which is given to a chapter based on its recent activities, community engagement, and potential for continuing their efforts into the future. The award was given by the Metro-Long Island Zone Executive Board.
NYIT’s NSBE members were impressed with the event, and gained a lot of valuable knowledge, insight and connections in the world of Engineering in the Northeast. A graduating senior, Lysa Miles, said of the event, “the whole time I felt like family when interacting with NSBE members from other schools…I am proud to be a member.” Students attending the event had access to a wealth of information regarding how to ace job interviews, how to prepare for job fairs, and plenty of career advice from seasoned professionals in the black engineering community. One sophomore member, Oreo, said: “the workshops and seminars were great and the speakers spoke very well. Thanks to the conference, I feel more comfortable going to career fairs in the future. My only regret is not finding out about NSBE until now!”
NYIT’s NSBE members are looking forward to attending the National NSBE Conference in Nashville next semester—a great opportunity for new members to continue to learn and flourish at an even larger event!
