School of Education Honors Alumni

Faculty, alumni, students, and friends of NYIT’s School of Education held a “Celebration of Excellence” on May 8 to honor outstanding alumni achievements. After a reception at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway, where attendees met old friends and made new acquaintances, nine alumni were recognized by faculty members who knew and admired them.

List of Awards Presented By NYIT Faculty Members

Hui-Yin Hsu, Ph.D., coordinator for NYIT's teacher education program, presented:

  • Outstanding K-12 Teacher to Christina Crimeni (B.S. ’10), who teaches at a private Montessori pre-school in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Shiang-Kwei Wang, Ph.D., interim chair of the M.S. in Instructional Technology program, presented:

  • Outstanding Instructional Technology Educator to Jonathan Redeker (M.S. '09), K-12 technology coordinator in Goshen Central School District.
  • Outstanding STEM Educator to Amanda Solarsh (ACERT '13), a seventh-grade science teacher at M.S. 104 in New York City.
  • Outstanding STEM Educator to Gina Tesoriero (ACERT '13), a learning specialist at M.S. 104.
  • Outstanding Organization Trainer to Luc-Philippe Paulemon (M.S. ’12), a systems operations engineer at Macmillan Science and Education.
  • Outstanding School Building Leader to Thea Laforestrie (ADIP '10), who has earned two NYIT master’s degrees and is committed to using technology to improve education.

Carol Dahir, Ed.D., chair of the school counseling program, presented:

  • Outstanding School Counselor Award to David Goldberg (M.S. '05), counselor at H. B. Mattlin Middle School in the Plainview-Old Bethpage (N.Y.) School District.

Michael Uttendorfer, Ed.D., dean of the School of Education, presented:

  • Distinguished Achievement Award to Jeanne Marie Donlick (M.S. ’02), who teaches mathematics at Harford Technical High School in Harford County, Maryland. Ms. Donlick was unable to attend.

Jim Martinez, Ph.D., coordinator of New York City Partnerships and faculty advisor for the School of Education alumni chapter, presented:

  • Honorary STEM Certificate to Ellen Darensbourg, the magnet resource specialist at STEM Institute of Manhattan, an elementary school in Harlem. She partnered with the School of Education to provide sites for NYIT students to gain service learning credits.
