The NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT Hosts "Cultures of the American Gulf Coast"

Thanks to a grant from the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT will host "Cultures of the American Gulf Coast: Work and Play in Story and Song from Louisiana to Florida." The events will take place 10-11 April 2014.

Nick Spitzer, Ph.D., is a folklorist and professor of anthropology and American Studies at Tulane University. He is best known as the creator and host of National Public Radio’s American Routes. He will bring a team of Cajun specialists to NYIT to introduce our students to traditional French Louisiana culture.

A highlight of the activities will be a performance of Jesse Lége, Joel Savoy & the Cajun Country Revival. In addition, Dr. Spitzer will screen his film Zydeco (1986), about African-French Louisiana musical traditions. University of Louisiana, Lafayette instructor, folklorist, and filmmaker Conni Castille will screen and discuss two of her films, I Always Do My Collars First (2006) and T-Galop: A Louisiana Horse Story (2012). Students and faculty are looking forward to this unique exposure to a little-known but influential American group.
