NYIT President: Ranking Systems Must Evolve and Improve

Nanjing, China (April 20, 2012)  -  NYIT President Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., challenged a delegation at today’s International University Presidents’ Forum to look beyond traditional rankings when measuring university outcomes.

“Ranking systems must continue to evolve and improve based on careful evaluation of their impact on universities and higher education systems,” President Guiliano said. “We can start by looking at a country’s economic needs and how its higher education system meets those needs. “

In remarks that underscored the changing role of the university in global education, President Guiliano stressed that universities should focus less on traditional ranking systems and more on ensuring that graduates possess the skills most associated with professional success: innovation, leadership, problem-solving, entrepreneurship, and the ability to work collaboratively.

“We need to look beyond borders to consider the global knowledge economy and the way our institutions are generating human capital that will meet its needs,” he added, noting that graduates of his university’s Nanjing program are employed at some of the biggest companies in China and the U.S., including IBM, China Telecom, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Unicom, and China Mobile.
