NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture Announces Fall Programming

The NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at the Nanjing campus has announced its fall lineup of events includes guest speakers, weekly film screenings, chat groups, and more. On Sept. 10, the center kicked off the semester with a program focusing on the American folk tradition of quilting. Attended by a group of select freshmen, the day featured a morning presentation by South Arts, an Atlanta, Ga.-based nonprofit arts foundation, on “The Gee’s Bend, Alabama Quilting Community,” complemented by an afternoon session on “The Tradition of Quilting and Community” in the United States.

This semester, NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture weekly activities include an “English Corner” chat group on Mondays and a Wednesday evening film colloquium and discussion. There will also be Current Events presentations by guest speakers such as:

·        Thursday, Sept. 20: NYIT Professor Jim Nolt will present “The Myth of the Market in Contemporary American Culture,” 12:30 - 1:45 p.m.
·        Thursday, Oct. 18, NYIT-Nanjing Dean and Executive Director Monique Taylor, Ph.D. (Harvard University) will speak on her book, Harlem Between Heaven and Hell (University of Minnesota, 2002), 6:30 - 7:45 p.m.
·        Tuesday, Oct. 30, journalist Ken Ellingwood, formerly of the Los Angeles Times, will present on his book Hard Line: Life and Death on the U.S. Mexican Border (Pantheon, 2004), 6:30-7:45 p.m.

“We encourage all NYIT faculty and staff members to participate in any of these events,” says Beverly Butcher, director of the center. “The more variety the students experience, the more refined their English language skills will become and the deeper their knowledge and understanding of multifaceted American culture will be.”
