NYIT and the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) will be hosting the "Crossing Borders: Traveling, Teaching, and Learning in a Global Age," conference between April 16-17, 2011 in Nanjing. The conference explores a variety of topics that touch upon the "crossing borders" theme, including teaching online vs. traditional courses, ESL courses, teaching abroad, and translations, multilingualism, texting/IM and cyberculture. Conference organizers welcome academics and students from local, national and international universities to submit abstracts. Click in for more details.
The conference topic focuses on border crossings, both real and imagined. Border crossings can take place, for instance, between nations, cultures, and minds, and may express limitations or enhanced understanding. As borders suggest both barriers and closeness, they paradoxically can be sites of fear, trauma, displacement or stagnation; or they can be dynamic and fluid places of discovery and change. In this age of technology, borders have shrunk, been redefined, replaced, and reestablished. We are interested in exploring how we perceive and interpret border crossings that take place as we travel, teach, and learn in a global age. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Teaching: online courses vs. traditional courses, ESL courses, teaching abroad
Communication and Linguistics: translations, telecommunications, bi- or multilingualism, texting/IM, linguistic borders, oral tradition
Arts: visual arts, creative writing, photography, dance, music
Travel: travel writing genre, studying abroad, living abroad, virtual travel
Culture and Identity: multiculturalism, transnationalism, disability, postcolonialism, cyber culture (facebook/myspace/twitter), cyber identities, race relations, gender, sexuality, self vs. community, fetishism, rituals, customs, globalization, diasporas and migration, imaginary homelands
Science and Technology: Western vs. traditional or holistic medicine, genetic engineering, space exploration, doctors without borders, internet, “gaming” (i.e. World of Warcraft), piracy, copyright infringement, film reception across borders
Philosophy and Rhetoric: comparative/contrastive philosophical thought
Academics and researchers, along with graduate students and postgraduate students, from local, national and international universities to submit abstracts pertaining to border crossings are welcome to submit abstracts pertaining to border crossings. The conference seek submissions from all branches of the humanities, the social sciences, the sciences, and the arts.

Wang Xiaoying, a student at NYIT-Nanjing, took second place in the "CCTV Star of Outlook English Talent Competition," sponsored by China Central Television, the major state broadcaster in Mainland China. Wang is a business major and will start her sophomore year at NYIT-Nanjing in the fall. Chen Pengpeng a business major and upcoming junior at NYIT-Nanjing, took first place in the contest at the city level.
The national competition, which is divided into four age groups, is the most famous national English competition in China and was launched by CCTV in 2000. Over 1,000 EFL training schools work in partnership with CCTV to facilitate this program and over 400,000 participated in 2009. In Nanjing there were 4,180 contestants alone.
We recently caught up with Wang Xiaoping to talk about the competition.
1. What inspired you to enter the competition?
The Star of Outlook English Talent Competition is one of the biggest English competitions in China. I like English and I would like to improve my English skills through practice, so I entered the competition.
2. How did you prepare for the competition?
I didn’t do any special preparations for the competition. I would like to thank my NYIT teachers including Nathan, Devon, Allyn and Professor Katyna, who helped me a great deal with my English during relevant classes and activities. This laid a good foundation for me to face the fierce competition.
3. What were some of the highlights for you during the competition or favorite memories?
It was an honor to compete with so many outstanding contestants. There was one contestant who was already 40 years old. He entered the competition to complete his English dream. His persistence and conscientiousness impressed me deeply. From him I learned that nothing is impossible to achieve if you put your heart into it. And his spirit also gave me motivations to go ahead when facing difficulties.
4. What were some of the biggest challenges during the completion?
The no-leader topic discussion might be a challenge. We were required to talk about the given topic in 5 member groups, and each group had only 3 minutes to state opinions. Since there was no leader set for each team, good team work spirit was essential for a team to win. You need to counterbalance well between personal performance and team work, and it might be a bit difficult to achieve both of them perfectly.
5. What are your aspirations after graduating?
I hope I can transform knowledge into success and wealth through hard work, and use the money to do some charity work. I also want to be a volunteer to serve people who are physically challenged in my spare time.
6. What are some of your favorite classes at NYIT?
I like speech, writing, management and marketing. Our professors represented by Dean Nolt and Professor Yoo are responsible and respectable. Their distinctive charming personalities create active class atmosphere and enable us to learn sufficient knowledge with great fun.
Here’s the bad news--the U.S. economy is shaky, but the good news is that NYIT’s graduates are moving on to some very exciting things.
Here's some dish from a few of our recent graduates from NYIT-Nanjing who completed their studies in New York.
Jianxing Chen - New York University
Libin Lu - New York University
Tianshu Lu - Worcester Polytechnic Institute

NYIT's Think Green Forum was featured by several major international media outlets, including People's Online Daily, the Xinhua News Agency, and China News. Find out what they're saying:
Education key in global green movement
SHANGHAI - Edward Guiliano, president and CEO of New York Institute of Technology (NYIT), said education - whether through its traditional role of teaching, or its role of creating knowledge through research, or simply through its role of modeling solutions - is as important as government or business in today's global discourse on sustainability and thinking green.
Speaking at a conference titled "Think Green: Energy, Education, Environmental Initiatives" - a global forum sponsored by NYIT and Nanjing University of Posts and Communications - in Nanjing in early April, Guiliano said while governments provide the necessary policy framework, bringing together business and academic communities with government "is a tested model for innovation, change, and getting things done."
Using NYIT's practice as an example, he said schools could help to stimulate and popularize new ideas by hosting energy innovation conferences, and also serving as the starting point for ideas from the classroom and the laboratory to be applied to the factory and the marketplace.
"As early as 1978, we hosted a conference on hydrogen fuel cells, which led to further development of hybrid vehicle prototypes just now coming into use. The academy, through its traditional role of teaching, scholarship and service, is particularly well positioned and compelled both by mission and compassionate imperative to play a central role in advancing solutions and policies on these vital subjects," he said.
In the battlefront against global warming, Guiliano also believes China is the right place to be.
He noted that many famous American energy and technology companies are building offices and laboratories in China, and are transferring top employees and their families here. Further, an increasing number of Chinese engineering students who studied in the U.S. are now returning to promising, rewarding, and important careers here in China.
Many of the best ideas in green technology - solar wind farms, electric cars, clean coal processing - are also being tested, applied, and brought to the market here in China, he added.
Although China also faces mounting challenges - as the world's largest car market with 2,000 cars added to its streets a day, it has surpassed the United States as the largest producer of greenhouse gases - China has made strenuous efforts to tackle those challenges.
The Chinese government, he said, has been strongly committed to developing green technology since the launch of the 863 Program as far back as 1986. The 863 Program has made it possible to take innovative ideas in wind, solar, electric, and coal energy alternatives first developed in the U.S. and Europe and apply them in China.
"We are here because Chinese and American thinkers and movers must lead along the road to a sustainable future in this century," he said.
"Think Green Global Forum" Held and Dr. Edward Guiliano Proposed Low-carbon Economy
The "Think Green Global Forum," co-hosted by New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT), was held in Nanjing, and Business Review was one of sponsors of the forum. At the meeting, NYIT President DEdward Guiliano said that bringing down "carbon" relies on ourselves.
Developing a low-carbon and green economy is part of a global consensus today. Especially after the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, amid a fever of research and development, discussing prospective policies on climate changes and new fields and new technologies, etc. has swept through the world. While the holding of the "Think Green Global Forum" co-hosted by New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) in Nanjing, the "Ancient Capital of 6 Dynasties" in China, from April 7 to 9, 2010, was an event following the trend. During the meeting, NYIT President Edward Guiliano was specially interviewed by the reporter with Wenhui Daily.
Dr. Edward Guiliano said to the reporter that he has visited China many times in the past 10 years. "I come to China once every three years." In the previous years, he has visited many Chinese cities. He said the sun could not be seen in several big Chinese cities like Shanghai and Shenzhen. This year, Dr. Edward Guiliano came to China again, and saw great change in China. For example, several cities strengthened environmental governance and achieved fruitful effects.
He said that sci-tech development makes it a reality to seek for new energy resources, and research on tidal energy, wind energy, solar energy, hydroenergy, bioenergy, geothermic energy, and nuclear energy is achieving rapid progress. Last year,a solar-powered carport was born in America, and American scientists have an experimental and demonstrative venue fornew batteries and photovoltaic technology manufacturers. It is heard that the research of alternative energy in China is being conducted. In China, there are many good ideas about green technologies. From solar farms to electric vehicles, and to clean coal processing, all these are being tested, applied, and promoted in China.
At the forum, Dr. Guiliano delivered a wonderful speech entitled "Think Green: Energy, Education, Environmental Initiatives." He recalled that Chinese Government launched the 863 Program in 1986, which emphasized developing green technology. The program may have preceded the U.S. and Europe in presenting the conception of wind energy and solar energy utilization, and alternative energy of electric power and coal, and to bring it to fruition. He said China's wind power generating power has multiplied each year since 2006. In 2003, China had no such industries as solar energy. Today, the quantity of solar batteries made by China is more than that of other countries. He found, in surprise, that the quantity of solar heaters made by China accounts for 50% of the world, and the application is more extensive than other countries. Moreover, China's Green Gen program is a hi-tech and low-emission thermal power technology, which is expected to put into production this year.
He said China is the largest developing country in the world, and there are 2,000 new vehicles on the road in China every day. China has become the largest country in auto manufacture and consumption. Thus, it is a new subject for not only the world but also for China to reduce car exhaust emissions and to seek alternative energy.
When asked how China and the U.S. will develop low-carbon economies, Dr. Guiliano said a relatively better solution to such global issues as energy, climate, and sustainable development relies on 1. technology; 2. commerce and market economy; 3. government and policy support; 4. education; and 5. breaking traditional boundaries among departments, enterprises, and even countries, and it is very possible to realize such goals relying on our strength, teamwork, and brainstorming.
Lady Barbara Thomas Judge, Chairman of United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), also attended the forum. Lady Judge was Juris Doctor of the Law School of New York University, and a founder of the International Transaction Department of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Since 2004, she has been serving as chairman of the UKAEA, and independent director of Massey Energy Company (U.S.), Magna International (Canada), and Nevada Bekaert (Belgium).
"Mean is the fundamental of the world and harmony the way." Dr. Edward Guiliano wrapped up the interview with a sentence of a sage of ancient China 2,500 years ago. It is affirmative that he is full of confidence of the future of a green world.
Chinese and U.S. Experts and Scholars Call for Green Education
