Nanjing, China (Mar. 28, 2011)- New York Institute of Technology (NYIT)’s Nanjing campus will host its first international conference, “Crossing Borders: Teaching and Learning in a Global Age,” from Friday, April 15 to Sunday, April 17 at Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications, San Pailou campus, in Nanjing, China.

Making connections from Shanghai to Nanjing, NYIT Vice President for Student Affairs Joe Ford traveled to China in December to attend the opening ceremony of the 11th cohort of the NYIT-JUFE MBA program in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.
During his weeklong visit, Ford met with administrators, students, and alumni from NYIT’s program sites and campus in China, and also explored new partnerships with Beijing-based universities interested in joint programs with NYIT. He rounded out his trip by paying a visit to the NYIT New York exchange students studying at NYIT-Nanjing during the fall 2010 semester.
In December, Xuetai Qi, adjunct assistant professor of philosophy at NYIT-Nanjing, was awarded a research grant by the National Department of Education of China for his research project, "Current State of Contemporary Metaethics in the West: Theme-based Studies."
His review of Mengzi: With Selections from Traditional Commentaries and The Essential Mengzi: Selected Passages with Traditional Commentary was published in the Fall 2010 issue of the APA Newsletter on Teaching Philosophy. His articles, "The A Priori Nature of Universal Ethics and Morality" and "Reasons, Sentiments and Normativity of Morality" were published in the November issue of the Journal of Social Sciences and the October issue of Morality and Civilization, respectively.
Marshall D. Willman, assistant professor of English, NYIT-Nanjing, was a guest lecturer at Fudan University in Shanghai, China on Nov. 12, 2010. His presentation, "Daoism and Scientific Method: A Case Study on Gut Feelings," can be found online.
On Oct. 12, the opening ceremony for the Nanjing campus welcomed nearly 340 incoming students and marked the fourth anniversary of the campus opening. Among the attendees were President Guiliano, who gave the new student welcome address, and Dean of Career Services John Hyde (pictured right), who shared plans for future career and alumni services initiatives for the campus's more than 1,100 students.
Special guests included administration from Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommuncations (NUPT), NYIT's partner in Nanjing, and Gregory Pfleger and Camille Purvis Dawson, cultural affairs officer and chief of the outreach unit, respectiviely, for the U.S. Consulate General's Office in Shanghai. On Oct. 11, upperclass students attended an Ice Cream Social and participated in an informal Q&A session with President Guiliano. Pictured above: NYIT-Nanjing faculty and staff members with NYIT and NUPT administration.
NYIT and the Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT) will be hosting the "Crossing Borders: Traveling, Teaching, and Learning in a Global Age," conference between April 16-17, 2011 in Nanjing. The conference explores a variety of topics that touch upon the "crossing borders" theme, including teaching online vs. traditional courses, ESL courses, teaching abroad, and translations, multilingualism, texting/IM and cyberculture. Conference organizers welcome academics and students from local, national and international universities to submit abstracts. Click in for more details.
The conference topic focuses on border crossings, both real and imagined. Border crossings can take place, for instance, between nations, cultures, and minds, and may express limitations or enhanced understanding. As borders suggest both barriers and closeness, they paradoxically can be sites of fear, trauma, displacement or stagnation; or they can be dynamic and fluid places of discovery and change. In this age of technology, borders have shrunk, been redefined, replaced, and reestablished. We are interested in exploring how we perceive and interpret border crossings that take place as we travel, teach, and learn in a global age. Interdisciplinary approaches are encouraged. Topics may include, but are not limited to:
Teaching: online courses vs. traditional courses, ESL courses, teaching abroad
Communication and Linguistics: translations, telecommunications, bi- or multilingualism, texting/IM, linguistic borders, oral tradition
Arts: visual arts, creative writing, photography, dance, music
Travel: travel writing genre, studying abroad, living abroad, virtual travel
Culture and Identity: multiculturalism, transnationalism, disability, postcolonialism, cyber culture (facebook/myspace/twitter), cyber identities, race relations, gender, sexuality, self vs. community, fetishism, rituals, customs, globalization, diasporas and migration, imaginary homelands
Science and Technology: Western vs. traditional or holistic medicine, genetic engineering, space exploration, doctors without borders, internet, “gaming” (i.e. World of Warcraft), piracy, copyright infringement, film reception across borders
Philosophy and Rhetoric: comparative/contrastive philosophical thought
Academics and researchers, along with graduate students and postgraduate students, from local, national and international universities to submit abstracts pertaining to border crossings are welcome to submit abstracts pertaining to border crossings. The conference seek submissions from all branches of the humanities, the social sciences, the sciences, and the arts.
For more information on the conference, e-mail Dr. Katyna Johnson at kjohns03@nyit.edu

Below is a list of winners:
First Prize: Hook
Second Prize: Lost Angel
Third Prize: Body Exchange

Wang Xiaoying, a student at NYIT-Nanjing, took second place in the "CCTV Star of Outlook English Talent Competition," sponsored by China Central Television, the major state broadcaster in Mainland China. Wang is a business major and will start her sophomore year at NYIT-Nanjing in the fall. Chen Pengpeng a business major and upcoming junior at NYIT-Nanjing, took first place in the contest at the city level.
The national competition, which is divided into four age groups, is the most famous national English competition in China and was launched by CCTV in 2000. Over 1,000 EFL training schools work in partnership with CCTV to facilitate this program and over 400,000 participated in 2009. In Nanjing there were 4,180 contestants alone.
We recently caught up with Wang Xiaoping to talk about the competition.
1. What inspired you to enter the competition?
The Star of Outlook English Talent Competition is one of the biggest English competitions in China. I like English and I would like to improve my English skills through practice, so I entered the competition.
2. How did you prepare for the competition?
I didn’t do any special preparations for the competition. I would like to thank my NYIT teachers including Nathan, Devon, Allyn and Professor Katyna, who helped me a great deal with my English during relevant classes and activities. This laid a good foundation for me to face the fierce competition.
3. What were some of the highlights for you during the competition or favorite memories?
It was an honor to compete with so many outstanding contestants. There was one contestant who was already 40 years old. He entered the competition to complete his English dream. His persistence and conscientiousness impressed me deeply. From him I learned that nothing is impossible to achieve if you put your heart into it. And his spirit also gave me motivations to go ahead when facing difficulties.
4. What were some of the biggest challenges during the completion?
The no-leader topic discussion might be a challenge. We were required to talk about the given topic in 5 member groups, and each group had only 3 minutes to state opinions. Since there was no leader set for each team, good team work spirit was essential for a team to win. You need to counterbalance well between personal performance and team work, and it might be a bit difficult to achieve both of them perfectly.
5. What are your aspirations after graduating?
I hope I can transform knowledge into success and wealth through hard work, and use the money to do some charity work. I also want to be a volunteer to serve people who are physically challenged in my spare time.
6. What are some of your favorite classes at NYIT?
I like speech, writing, management and marketing. Our professors represented by Dean Nolt and Professor Yoo are responsible and respectable. Their distinctive charming personalities create active class atmosphere and enable us to learn sufficient knowledge with great fun.
Here’s the bad news--the U.S. economy is shaky, but the good news is that NYIT’s graduates are moving on to some very exciting things.
Here's some dish from a few of our recent graduates from NYIT-Nanjing who completed their studies in New York.
Jianxing Chen - New York University
Libin Lu - New York University
Tianshu Lu - Worcester Polytechnic Institute
Yuan-Yuan Chen - returning to China
Wei Ning - Fordham University
Mengmeng Yue - returning to China and applying to graduate schools in the U.S.
Stay tuned for more updates on where our new graduates are going.
