James H. Nolt, Ph.D. was recently awarded the "May First Labor Honorary Medal" by the Jiangsu Provincial Trade Union Federation in recognition of his work as campus dean at New York Institute of Technology’s (NYIT) campus in Nanjing, China.

The award recognizes outstanding achievements in management or workplace innovation. Nolt was nominated by Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications (NUPT), NYIT’s partner university in China.

“Since I study Chinese politics and history, I was aware of this award, but I never imagined I would win one. It represents many people’s hard work toward making the NYIT-NUPT joint venture a success,” says Nolt, who has been campus dean at NYIT-Nanjing since its opening in 2007.

The medals are presented annually at China’s International Labor Day, known as May Day. The award ceremony was held in April and attended by many dignitaries, including Zhijun Luo, governor of Jiangsu Province, Baohua Liang, director of the Provincial People's Congress Standing Committee, and Yan Zhang, chair of the Provincial Federation of Trade Unions and deputy director of the Provincial People's Congress. Other medal winners included Hakan Sundqvist, president of Nanjing Ericsson Panda Communications Company Ltd., Willmes Udo, director of Bosch Automotive Diesel, and Jidong Xie, departmental director of NUPT’s College of Telecommunications and Information Engineering.

Nolt previously taught Asian Studies at Seton Hall University and political science at the New School for Social Research at Vanderbilt University. He is writing a book under contract with Routledge Press entitled International Political Economy: The Business of War and Peace. He earned his Ph.D. in political science, with a focus on international relations, from the University of Chicago and a master’s degree in economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and worked for six years as a software engineer.
