NYIT-NUPT Symposium Examines Social Sciences

Marshall D. Willman, assistant professor of English, and Xuetai Qi, adjunct professor of social sciences, organized and chaired the first NYIT-NUPT Symposium on Mind, Value, and Moral Psychology on May 11. The event convened scholars of philosophy from Chinese universities in Nanjing, Shanghai, and Shandong to discuss contemporary issues in moral philosophy and psychology from an East-West comparative perspective.

Nanjing International School Names NYIT Dean to Board

Monique Taylor, Ph.D., dean and executive director at NYIT-Nanjing, has been invited to join the board of the Nanjing International School effective Aug. 1. The board is responsible for policy and strategic decisions based on a long-term vision of school development and planning. The Nanjing International School is a not-for-profit entity that values transparency and uses all school fees for the sole purpose of benefiting students. Read more about Monique Taylor.

NYIT Students Win Awards at 2013 Regional ACM-ICPC Invitational

Eight NYIT students were awarded at the May 12 regional ACM-ICPC invitational, hosted by and held at the Nanjing University of Science and Technology. More than 400 students (133 teams and 40 universities) participated, representing the very best of all computer science students in Jiangsu province.

“Making Creativity Work”

On May 7 and 8, the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture at NUPT presented “Making Creativity Work,” a year-long, innovative project of communication arts study and creation, funded by a $25,000 U.S. Department of State Federal Assistance Award. “Making Creativity Work” featured a panel discussion about Intellectual Property Rights and the Film Industry and a review and critique of NYIT Student Public Service Announcements (PSAs).

NYIT Student PSA Review and Critique

Wednesday, May 8, 5 - 7 p.m., NYIT Communication Arts Professor, Thomas Speirs will lead a review and critique of NYIT student PSAs on Intellectual Property Rights. Wednesday’s review and critique is the last step before the PSAs, written, directed and produced by NYIT student film-makers, are submitted for judging in the NUPT Student Film Festival held later this month. The winning PSA will win 10,000 RMB 1st prize.

Intellectual Property Rights Panel Discussion

Tuesday, May 7, 1:30 - 3 p.m., NYIT Communication Arts Professor Geoff Bell, Ph.D., will moderate a panel discussion between film and IPR experts from Asia and America and NYIT students to explore such as topics as cultural differences in copyright behavior, the law and technology, and artists’ ability to manage rights to their own creative works in the present context.

Marketing Professor Publishes Book Chapter

Amanda Han

Amanda Han, Ph.D., assistant professor of marketing studies at NYIT-Nanjing, wrote a chapter in the book, Entrepreneurship in the Informal Economy: Models, Approaches and Prospects for Economic Development, published by Routledge in December 2012. She is the author of chapter 7, "Informal Online Entrepreneurship in South Korea." Read more.

Business Students Win Awards in Marketing Competition

NYIT Business Students

Two teams from NYIT-Nanjing's School of Management won second prize in the finals of the 5th National Marketing Competition of Universities, Dec. 7-9 at Beijing University of Technology and Business. The competition was organized by the China Marketing Association and sponsored by Hangzhou Wahaha Group Co. Ltd., China's largest beverage company. The final competition tasked the teams with four components: compilation of actual Wahaha beverage sales results for June-November 2012, a computer marketing simulation challenge, creation of a marketing report, and presentation and defense of a marketing plan. The seven NYIT students were among 160 university teams who were finalists in their respective provincial level competitions. Read more.

The event attended by more than 350 faculty, students, alumni, and university guests was coordinated by Keh Kwek, associate dean of NYIT-Nanjing and assistant dean of the School of Management on campus. Award-Winning Indie Film Director Coming to NYIT-Nanjing

For Once In My Life

Faculty members and their guests are invited to an American Documentary Showcase on Thursday, Dec. 6 at the NYIT Center for Humanities and Culture in Nanjing. The showcase will feature a screening of the 2010 documentary film, For Once in My Life, and a discussion with its director, Jim Bigham, and the filmmaker Mark Harris. Bigham won a 2007 Independent Spirit Award for best first feature for Sweet Land, which he produced. His latest endeavor follows a group of talented musicians who suffer from a range of physical and mental disabilities as they prepare for the concert of a lifetime.

The event co-sponsored by the U.S. Consulate General in Shanghai will take place at the following times:

  • 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Administration Auditorium (screening)
  • 2-4 p.m., Teaching Building 1, room 207 (discussion)

Annie Christain Published in “Wag’s Revue”

Annie Christain, assistant professor of English at NYIT-Nanjing, published three poems in Wag’s Revue: “Pretending to Go and Come from Heaven by Fire,” “The Andy Griffith Show: The Guitar Player,” and “Thomas the Tank Engine Revelation 9.”

Additionally, on November 9, 2012, Christain read her poetry through video conference at the 47th Annual Western Literature Association Conference in Lubbock, Texas.
