For the second year in a row NYIT Vancouver hosted a free tax clinic on campus where 16 volunteers had an opportunity to offer e-filing assistance to low income individuals. The tax clinic ran from March 3 until April 30th and was staffed by volunteers who completed a mandatory training program offered by representatives of Canada Revenue Agency’s Community Volunteer Income Tax Program.
This year’s volunteers included six NYIT students (Siten Patel, Santhosh Kotagiri, Angie Chen, Gary Huang, Thomas Bader and Yatin Patil) and one alumnus (Saravanan Rajasekaran) who worked with much enthusiasm and diligence at the clinic. Cyrus Zhang, who also volunteered at the clinic in 2013, offered additional training and practical advice to everyone. Some volunteers also operated a mobile tax clinic at two mental health facilities in the Vancouver area. A special certificate of appreciation was awarded to 10 of the 16 volunteers.
Drs. Petra Dilling and Izelde van Jaarsveld acted as campus hosts and assured that everything went smoothly whilst administrative associate, Sandeep Cheema, fielded calls. We should like to thank all our volunteers for their tireless effort as well as staff and faculty who welcomed members of the public on campus. We are looking forward to hosting an even bigger tax clinic on campus next year.
